FIFA World Cup 2034 to drive Saudi aluminium demand, set to surge 80% by 2030

Saudi Arabia’s aluminium consumption could climb to as much as 1.8 million tonnes a year by 2030, as the Kingdom ramps up infrastructure and industrial development ahead of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Ahmad Al-Alshaikh, executive vice president of Maaden’s Aluminum Business Unit, said demand is expected to reach at least 1.6 million tonnes annually by 2030, up from around 1 million tonnes currently. Consumption could potentially double over the next five to seven years, he said. Speaking on the sidelines of the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference in Budapest, Al-Alshaikh said construction of 15 new stadiums for the football tournament is helping to support aluminium demand, Reuters reported. Major exhibitions and preparations for the World Cup are also expected to contribute to...

Oklahoma aluminium smelter project faces Inola referendum and the $4b facility could change location

The USD 4 billion Oklahoma aluminium smelter project planned by Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Century Aluminum is facing a new hurdle in Inola, where the city council has extended a moratorium on smelter permits and called a referendum on the proposed facility. The 750,000-tonne-per-year aluminium smelter, announced in January, is expected to more than double current US primary aluminium production and would be the first new primary aluminium smelter in the country in almost 50 years. It would also become the largest source of primary aluminium in the Western Hemisphere. The project has taken on added importance as the US imports roughly 60 per cent of the primary aluminium it uses. Aluminium is essential to transportation, defence, aerospace and electrical infrastructure, making...

New Zealand govt. withdraws $60 million subsidy from Tiwai Point aluminium smelter

The New Zealand government has withdrawn a composite subsidy worth about $60 million, from the Rio Tinto majority-owned Tiwai Point aluminium smelter in Southland. A freshly released cabinet paper has unveiled that James Shaw, the Minister of Climate Change had demanded the government to accept this measure late in 2021. The subsidy phrased that the New Zealand government provides 934,400 free units per year under the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to the aluminium smelter as part of an electricity allocation drive. Now the companies have to capitulate a fixed number of these units, presently priced at $75 based on their emissions, with each unit roughly translating to a tonne of carbon dioxide. However, some large emitters and large power users possess some free units allocated each year...

Chinese primary aluminium inventories shrink by 50,000 tonnes W-o-W on delayed arrivals of stocks

According to the Shanghai Metals Market, social inventories of Chinese aluminium ingots have continued to decrease by 50,000 tonnes from a week ago, across eight major consumption areas, including SHFE warrants. Data shows the inventories have come in at 1.04 million tonnes, compared with 1.09 million tonnes last Thursday, March 17. China’s domestic aluminium market destocking has resulted in the decline in ingot inventories, primarily at Gongyi and Nanhai. Meanwhile, on Monday, the inventories dropped by 28,000 tonnes over the weekend to stand at 1.06 million tonnes. The chart below indicates the current status of...

Anglesey Aluminium plant gets new patron to continue construction, says Orthios

After gaining additional funding, a recycling enterprise that is rebuilding already shut-down aluminium plant claims it is planning to settle "outstanding invoices" of the already shut down Anglesey Aluminium plant. After smelting ceased in 2009, Orthios acquired the old Anglesey Aluminium plant near Holyhead in 2016. Anglesey Aluminium was a joint venture between Rio Tinto and Kaiser Aluminium. However, in September 2009, the Anglesey Aluminium plant was shut down, as they failed to achieve a reduced energy arrangement. The decision was taken jointly by co-owners Rio Tinto Group and Kaiser Aluminium. Orthios had previously stated its intention to construct a 299 MW plant as well as hydroponic and aquaculture centres, however, finance for these projects got terminated. The company, on the...

India’s domestic aluminium smelters receive lowest coal rakes since September, pushing the country more to imports

India’s domestic coal supply to aluminium smelters record further decline with railway rakes supplying coal at the lowest rate since September, while the energy crisis appeared at its peak. This, as a consequence, has compelled the country’s aluminium industry to import more amid rising cost pressures. Data provided by Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi to Parliament shows the aluminium industry received an average of 18.4 coal-laden carriages a day in the first half of March as against 17.8 rakes in September. Aluminium smelters in India are suffering from lower coal supply while also reeling under surging oil and gas prices. The tighter coal supply is mainly because State-run monopoly Coal India Limited is diverting more supplies to power plants to avoid power shortages like last...
