US aluminium industry highlights importance of domestic smelting capacity for national security

The United States needs a stronger domestic primary aluminium industry to support national security, military equipment and critical infrastructure, according to an economic analysis by Adam Hersh, an economist and research fellow at the University of Massachusetts. Hersh presented the findings at a press event in Washington, D.C. He highlighted the need for domestic production of high-purity aluminium used in military applications. He said the US currently has no operating smelters capable of producing this specialised aluminium, leaving the country reliant on overseas supplies and exposed to possible supply disruptions. The report points to a major change in US aluminium production over the past 25 years. In 2000, the country accounted for around 15 per cent of global aluminium...

AAC welcomes Canada’s implementation of smelt and cast reporting for aluminium imports

The Aluminum Association of Canada (AAC) welcomes the integration of country of smelt and cast reporting into Canada’s Aluminum Import Monitoring Program (AIM), effective October 1, 2026. This milestone strengthens transparency across aluminium supply chains and equips authorities with better information to monitor trade flows and identify potential circumvention. The new requirements build on Canada’s progressive development of its aluminium import monitoring framework: • September 1, 2019: Canada launched AIM under General Import Permit No. 83, following the Canada–US joint statement on steel and aluminium trade. • Summer 2024: Global Affairs Canada (GAC) consulted stakeholders on collecting and publishing country of smelt and cast information. • July 31, 2025: Under a separate trade...

Macro sentiment relatively cautious, consumption resilience underpins aluminium prices

Futures: SHFE aluminium closed at RMB 23,145 per tonne, edging down 0.19 per cent. Although prices held above MA5 (23,077) and MA10 (23,044), they remained capped by MA30 (23,760) and MA60 (23,767), with the overall market in a consolidation phase following the sharp decline. The MACD indicator's dual lines (DIF=-261.81, DEA=-237.16) operated below the zero axis, with the green bar expanding to -49.29, failing to extend the previous day's bottom divergence repair, indicating fading rebound momentum. Trading volume shrank to 54,800 lots, with market activity turning cautious. The suggested core trading range for SHFE aluminium is 22,700-23,500. LME aluminium closed at USD 3,008 per tonne, edging up 0.07 per cent. Prices barely held above MA5 (3,002.4) but remained pressured by MA10...

Russian aluminium accounts for nearly 100% of available LME stocks in September

Russian-origin aluminium accounted for 99.98 per cent of available aluminium stocks in London Metal Exchange (LME) warehouses at the end of September, up from 95 per cent in August, as Indian metal stocks dwindled to just 50 tonnes. The figures, released by the exchange on Wednesday, highlight the limited choice of aluminium available for delivery through the LME warehouse system. Total available, or on-warrant, aluminium inventories fell by 6.5 per cent to 226,675 tonnes at the end of September, marking their lowest level since March 2025. The decline came as the conflict in the Middle East tightened global supply. Although available Russian aluminium stocks also decreased, falling by 3,425 tonnes during the month to 226,625 tonnes, their share of the remaining inventory increased as...

Aluminium falls 1.4% as easing Hormuz restrictions raise supply expectations

Aluminium prices declined by 1.4 per cent to INR 320.25 (USD 3.37) as easing restrictions on passage through the Strait of Hormuz reduced concerns over supply disruptions in the Gulf region. According to Kedia Advisory, the decline also reflected expectations of recovering smelter operations, higher Indonesian production and rising Chinese exports. The softer price outlook comes despite falling visible inventories, which continue to provide underlying support to the market. Aluminium exports from Indonesia exceeded 150,000 tonnes in August, while Chinese aluminium exports increased by 17.2 per cent year on year, adding to expectations of improved global availability. According to Citi, accelerating supply growth outside China could shift the global aluminium market from a deficit of...

As Angul smelter expands to 0.96 MTPA, NALCO turns to aluminium fluoride supply security

National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has invited expressions of interest (EOI) from manufacturers, investors and potential joint-venture partners to establish aluminium fluoride (AlF3) production facilities as it prepares to expand its Angul smelter capacity from 0.46 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to approximately 0.96 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The proposed facilities would produce high bulk density and low bulk density grades of aluminium fluoride, a critical input in the Hall-Héroult process used for aluminium smelting. Through the initiative, NALCO aims to secure a reliable, cost-competitive supply of the material and reduce its dependence on imports. According to the EOI document, NALCO/BD/ST/2026/5805, dated September 21, 2026, interested parties must submit their...

Aluminium futures fall to $3,050/t, hits lowest level since February as supply outlook improves

Aluminium futures in the UK fell to around USD 3,060 per tonne on October 12, 2026, reaching their lowest level since February, as a stronger US dollar, easing concerns over Middle East supply disruptions and expanding Indonesian production weighed on prices. The decline reflects a shift in market sentiment as the prospect of additional supply improves, while weaker demand expectations in China add pressure to London Metal Exchange (LME) aluminium prices. Middle East smelter restarts ease supply concerns The faster-than-expected recovery of aluminium smelters in the Middle East has prompted a reassessment of the global supply outlook. Macquarie recently lowered its forecast for the global aluminium supply deficit as smelter restarts in the region progressed more quickly than anticipated....

Potline and rolling mill uptime: The electrical layer behind the price

A rolling-mill drive can trip even when its encoder passes a bench test. A refinery instrument can report erratic readings with no obvious process upset. Engineers may suspect the devices first, but the installed cables, mating interfaces and routing deserve the same scrutiny. Intermittent faults sometimes disappear the moment an assembly is touched. That uncertainty has an economic cost: investigation consumes maintenance time, and a missed control signal may delay equipment availability. This article concerns sensor, instrumentation, encoder, fieldbus and appropriately rated low-power auxiliary interfaces, typically carrying signals or modest loads—not power feeders. Main motor circuits, plant distribution, rectifier outputs and potline busbars are outside its scope. No connector type...
