Alba runs at 1.3 mtpa as Bahrain smelter navigates Middle East disruptions

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) is currently producing aluminium at an annualised rate of around 1.3 million tonnes, with the smelter operating at roughly 80 per cent of its pre-Iran war capacity, according to CEO Ali Al Baqali. Alba had a pre-war capacity of around 1.6 million tonnes per year, but production was disrupted after the outbreak of the war and restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz affected exports. The smelter was also hit by an Iranian attack in late March. The Bahrain-based producer is now operating Lines 4, 5 and 6, together representing annualised aluminium production of approximately 1.3 million tonnes, Al Baqali told Reuters on the sidelines of the Fastmarkets Aluminium Conference in Budapest on September 16. Al Baqali described the damage from the Iranian strike as minor...

Beyond the smelter: Companies powering the US aluminum industry’s rebuild

For the past two decades, the US aluminium industry has been treading through a volatile path, with a domestic primary aluminium sector deteriorating at a rapid and alarming rate, and the number of operational smelters falling from around thirty to only four. Primary aluminum output was estimated at 660,000 metric tons in 2025, leaving the country heavily reliant on imports. The situation was compounded by the Section 232 tariffs on aluminum products, further blocking the inbound trade. The rebuilding of domestic capacity, therefore, is not only about restarting or constructing smelters. It also depends on the infrastructure and technology needed to transform molten aluminum into usable products, maintain ageing electrolysis assets, process scrap efficiently, and improve metal quality....

China aluminium market stays supported as inventories fall and prices gain nearly 8%

China’s domestic aluminium inventories declined, giving some support to aluminium prices. However, China’s aluminium production remained high, while a new alumina project in Guangxi entered trial production and is expected to add to future supply. For aluminium, the fall in domestic inventories is a positive factor for prices. However, the supply picture remains mixed, as China’s aluminium production reached a record 4 million tonnes in August, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Output was 4.7 per cent higher year on year, while production during January-August reached around 31 million tonnes, up 3.9 per cent from the same period last year. At the current pace, annual production could reach around 47 million tonnes, above the country’s long-standing 45-million-tonne...

Donor Forum ranks Rusal among the top companies in terms of corporate social responsibility

The Russian aluminium giant Rusal, which is also among the biggest producers of aluminium worldwide, has risen to the top of the annual Donor Forum association ranking for corporate social responsibility. RUSAL received the highest rating possible and was placed in the A + category, as determined by the findings of the study of company social investment systems. A competition for corporate social activities was launched by Donor Forum this year as well. The expert jury gave two of RUSAL's social programmes top marks, and both took home awards. The programme "Sustainable Development of Social Responsibility Territories" came in second place in the category "The Best Corporate Social Investment Program in the Territories in the Context of Sustainable Development and Business Strategy." WTO rules in favour of Norway, rejects US imports duties on aluminium and steel

A World Trade Organization (WTO) panel has ruled in favour of Norway against the United States in a dispute Norway brought over U.S. import duties imposed on aluminium and steel in 2018. Former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a memorandum setting responsibilities in March 2018. It exempted the European Union and some other allies but struck non-EU member Norway, a significant aluminium producer. The tariffs were imposed on American manufacturers, who had difficulty competing with cheap imports and were forced to close several domestic smelters. "The WTO panel's report, which was released today, concludes that the U.S. tariff on steel and aluminium was in breach of the WTO rules," said the Norwegian ministry. Many members have lodged similar complaints with the WTO, including the...

Aluminium prices drop as smelters in Gansu and Inner Mongolia resume production

With smelters in Gansu and Inner Mongolia starting to begin output, aluminium prices recorded a fall on Wednesday, December 7. The recent bulls have been priced in by investors, who have since begun to fret about the speed of US rate hikes and the prospects for Chinese demand. At the current high aluminium prices, market activity in the aluminium ingot and aluminium billet segments was comparatively poor. Poor sales and expensive aluminium may force some downstream manufacturers to halt output. In November, the nation exported 455,599 tonnes of unwrought aluminium and primary, alloy, and semi-finished aluminium products. China's trade surplus decreased to USD 69.84 billion in November of this year from USD 71.7 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, significantly below...

EU plans to propose sanctions against Russia's mining industry

The European Union's politically independent executive arm, the European Commission, is planning to bring a proposal for a ban on new investments in Russia's mining sector as part of a new package of sanctions for the Russia-Ukraine geopolitical crisis. In accordance with our source, the prohibition on mining investment, which will have exceptions for certain products, is part of a ninth EU sanctions package that officials will discuss with member states next week and aim to reach an agreement on. Before the Russia-Ukraine conflict, foreign investment accounted for one-quarter of Russia's vast mining sector, producing commodities such as gold, iron ore, uranium and phosphates. It would be Brussels' first direct attack on Russia's metals sector, which it has previously avoided due to...

Ten sustainability drives in the aluminium sector setting trends before the world

Lightweight, strong, durable, and infinitely recyclable, aluminium is a sustainable metal of choice. As the world strives to achieve an energy-efficient future, aluminium continues to provide innovative solutions to businesses and consumers, offering the benefits of a circular economy to the industry by being able to go through recycling multiple times without losing any mechanical, physical or chemical properties. But the dichotomy of the metal is, whilst being a solution to a carbon-neutral world, aluminium itself is part of the sustainability challenges the earth faces. Aluminium is a significant source of carbon dioxide, responsible for about 3 per cent of the world’s 9.4 Gt of direct industrial CO2 emissions in 2021. Being an energy-intensive metal, it accounts for nearly 1.1 billion...
