For the past two decades, the US aluminium industry has been treading through a volatile path, with a domestic primary aluminium sector deteriorating at a rapid and alarming rate, and the number of operational smelters falling from around thirty to only four. Primary aluminum output was estimated at 660,000 metric tons in 2025, leaving the country heavily reliant on imports. The situation was compounded by the Section 232 tariffs on aluminum products, further blocking the inbound trade. The rebuilding of domestic capacity, therefore, is not only about restarting or constructing smelters. It also depends on the infrastructure and technology needed to transform molten aluminum into usable products, maintain ageing electrolysis assets, process scrap efficiently, and improve metal quality....
China’s domestic aluminium inventories declined, giving some support to aluminium prices. However, China’s aluminium production remained high, while a new alumina project in Guangxi entered trial production and is expected to add to future supply. For aluminium, the fall in domestic inventories is a positive factor for prices. However, the supply picture remains mixed, as China’s aluminium production reached a record 4 million tonnes in August, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Output was 4.7 per cent higher year on year, while production during January-August reached around 31 million tonnes, up 3.9 per cent from the same period last year. At the current pace, annual production could reach around 47 million tonnes, above the country’s long-standing 45-million-tonne...

Aluminium is benefitting a lot these days from innovations brought in by eminent institutions across the globe. Some innovations have evolved the production processes of the metal, while others have advanced the technologies used in the processes. Here in this article, we have picked five institutions that have treated the global aluminium value chain to one-of-a-kind technologies and applications. EU’s Reveal Research Project works on heat-based energy storage in aluminium The Reveal Research Project involving nine participants from seven European countries has initiated the noble objective of producing aluminium from alumina in a way that emits the least amount of carbon dioxide. The project magnifies a vital idea if aluminium can hold electricity as heat that can be released later to...

The Board of the Russian aluminium giant and one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, Rusal, has approved the updated climate strategy until 2032 with a perspective up to 2050. The updated climate strategy was adopted at the Rusal Board of Directors meeting in Krasnoyarsk. The Strategy is divided into two scenarios: basic and intensive, each of which defines a strict framework for achieving the company's decarbonization goals. Rusal plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity per tonne of metal from all production facilities (Scope 1, Scope 2 - direct and indirect energy emissions) by at least 25 per cent by 2032 and by at least 47 per cent by 2050, compared to 2018, excluding the effect from carbon emissions neutralization projects. This reduction is in line with the most...

Aluminium sheets are hugely in demand due to the rising Japanese automotive sector that gulps them down to constitute vehicle body components like panels, bonnets and doors. EGA has nourished a business relationship with Kobe Steel for more than two decades and a half, supplying them with over thousands of tonnes of aluminium each year....

On December 19, 2022, the world's leading industrial company committed to a sustainable future, Norsk Hydro and two partners stated that they plan to build an onshore wind farm costing between 3 and 4 billion Norwegian crowns ($304 million-$405 million) in Norway's west coast. If permitted, the project would use 50 wind turbines to provide one terawatt hour (TWh) of clean energy for present and future enterprises in the Hoeyanger and Sunnfjord areas. Local communities in Norway have recently opposed onshore wind farm projects out of concern for preserving pure nature, but Hydro said it aimed to overcome any potential opposition. Hydro, in its statement, stated, "The project will provide yearly income for Hoeyanger and Sunnfjord municipalities, as well as local value creation in the...

The advent of the Paris Agreement in 2015 made it very clear to the energy-intensive industries of the world that it was high time to curb their carbon emissions. Factories and refineries were warned about the severe effects of carbon earlier, but with this agreement, the entire world came to actual terms with the truth about nature's depreciating condition. Instantly, many big organisations started mapping their journey toward carbon-less material or component production. Among them, aluminium plays a considerable part since it is a fully integrated industry for mining, energy-intensive refineries and product manufacturing facilities. The prominent players in the sector had to take a well-calculated step if they wanted to transform themselves into green industries. The need for renewable...
