Primary aluminium recap: Alcoa desires Spanish Government’s intervention in keeping the San Ciprián smelter active

To address concerns about the San Ciprián complex, which includes an alumina refinery and an aluminium smelter, Alcoa Corporation organised a series of talks with key stakeholders. This week, officials from their Spanish operational companies will meet with representatives from national and regional authorities in Spain to address the complex's financial losses. One of the seven finalists in NASA's 2023 Breakthrough, Innovative, and Game-Changing Idea (BIG Idea) Challenge: Lunar Forge was a multidisciplinary team from Missouri S&T, a Rolla-based research institution. The Russian Aluminium Association warned the local sector about the negative consequences of Western sanctions, tariffs, and price decreases. Global aluminium prices dropped to their lowest level since March 2021, while the United States and the European Union have almost banned Russian shipments.

A multidisciplinary team from Missouri S&T, the Rolla-based research institute, was one of the seven finalists in NASA's 2023 Breakthrough, Innovative, and Game-Changing Idea (BIG Idea) Challenge: Lunar Forge. Baotou Aluminium Industry's cast aluminium alloy ingots passed the China Quality Certification Centre's evaluation and certification test. Each kilogram of cast aluminium alloy ingot has a carbon footprint value of 14.87 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent, which fulfils national green product emission regulations and has been given the Product Carbon Footprint Certificate.

According to the China customs data, China’s unwrought aluminium alloy imports in October 2023 were recorded at 108,900 tonnes, up 17.5 per cent M-o-M and 9.2 per cent Y-o-Y. From January to October 2023, total imports stood at 907,800 tonnes, reflecting a 15.9 per cent fall Y-o-Y.

The United States aluminium crude metal and alloy imports from the United Arab Emirates continued to fall in August 2023 but at a slower rate than the previous month. According to the US Census Bureau data, the United States imported 23,100 tonnes of aluminium crude metal and alloy, which reflected a downfall of 12.5 per cent month-on-month.

According to trading company Marubeni, the premiums paid by Japanese purchasers for aluminium are expected to stay within the range of $75-$95 per tonne during the first quarter of 2024. Vedanta Aluminium, a business of Vedanta Limited, reportedly achieved a breakthrough in aluminium smelting technique that would reduce energy consumption and curb carbon emissions. On National Energy Conservation Day, Vedanta announced that its new energy-efficient technique, an advanced pot lining design, is ready to be deployed at its smelters to reduce energy consumption by up to 250 kWh per tonne of aluminium produced.
