No decision on closure of smelter, says Alcoa

A cloud hangs over the smelter's future, with $40 million of government assistance granted by the federal and Victorian governments in 2012 running out at the end of June.
Alcoa in January said the company would not be seeking further government assistance for the smelter, which employs around 500 full-time employees.
A caller to 3AW radio on Monday said that an announcement on the smelter's future could be made as soon as Tuesday. But an Alcoa spokeswoman said its fate had not been decided.

"At this stage no decision has been made and we remain committed to getting back to our employees by [the] end of March about the future of Point Henry," Alcoa's Nichola Holgate said.
The Premier's office said that it was not aware of any imminent announcement by the company on the future of the Geelong plant.
