As the deadline for use of nylon packaging materials looms in Nairobi, and with the government being strict about not reversing the ban of environmentally hazardous material, local shoppers, retailers, and plastic paper manufactures are now looking for alternative materials.

The use of aluminium foil could be among the next options for the locals. Despite the high prices, aluminium foils are more environment friendly and 100% recyclable. It is a healthier option for food and other consumer perishable packaging as it stops moisture from entering packaged goods.
This comes after Nairobi County said that nylon paper users would have to pay for alternative wrapping materials when they purchase goods from any corner shops and supermarkets.
The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has criticised the ban alleging it has disrupted production in various companies. A number of companies are now contemplating a switch to the costly aluminium foil paper as the latter prevents light, oxygen, moisture and bacteria from entering packaged products.

This is a positive development towards sustainability and a healthier environment despite the initial concern among locals on the production loss and cost increase.
