According to the International Aluminium Institute survey, the world alumina production recorded 10.232 million tonnes in February 2023, reflecting a decrease of 10.40 per cent month-on-month and representing the second month of downfall this year. In January 2023, the alumina output was 11.420 million tonnes, down by 2.36 per cent from 11.696 million tonnes a month earlier. Thus, it is to be noted that the decline rate in global alumina production intensified during February’23.
On a year-on-year calculation, the world alumina production in February 2023 stood almost restrained compared to 10.262 million tonnes.
The world average daily production of alumina during February 2023 was 365,400 tonnes – 0.81 per cent or 3000 tonnes less than 368,400 tonnes in January 2023, and 0.30 per cent or 1,100 tonnes down from 366,500 tonnes in February 2022.
In the first two months of 2023, the global alumina output totalled 21.652 million tonnes, down by 1.75 per cent from 22.037 million tonnes during the same period last year.
China, the world’s leading alumina producer, churned out 5.844 million tonnes in February 2023 versus 6.470 million tonnes in January. That reflected a plunge of 9.68 per cent month-on-month, found IAI data. In the first two months of the year, China produced 12.314 million tonnes of alumina – 4.71 per cent more than 11.760 million tonnes a year ago.
However, despite the decline in China’s monthly alumina output, average daily production stood restrained at 208,700 tonnes month-on-month. On an annual basis, the daily output recorded an increase of 9.61 per cent from 190,400 tonnes.
In the Oceania region, alumina production during February 2023 was 1.403 million tonnes, which reflected a sharp fall of 18.05 per cent M-o-M from 1.712 million tonnes and a decline of 18.28 per cent Y-o-Y from 1.717 million tonnes. In the first two months of the year, Oceania’s production of alumina totalled 3.115 million tonnes – 10.23 per cent less than 3.470 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.
The average daily production in Oceania during February was 50,100 tonnes, compared to 55,200 tonnes a month ago and 61,300 tonnes a year earlier.
