The US dollar fell on Monday against a basket of rivals, as risk appetite improved on a flurry of announcements about a potential COVID-19 vaccine and expectations of more stimulus from Europe and from the US.

Three-month LME aluminium closed little changed at US$ 1,662.5 per tonne on Monday in choppy trading. It is likely to move at US$ 1,650-1,690 per tonne today.

SHFE Aluminium Price Trend

Benchmark aluminium price for SHFE increased to US$ 2038 per tonne on Monday, July 20, after registering four consecutive hikes from US$ 2172 per tonne to US$ 2011 per tonne.

Energy Consumption in Aluminium Smelting

The most-liquid SHFE August contract hovered in a tight range, holding onto much of gains from Friday night to end up 1.03 per cent at RMB 14,245 per tonne. It remains below the five-day moving average. Low stockpiles under warrants and tight spot availability are expected to continue to provide traction to SHFE aluminium.

The most-active SHFE August contract reversed earlier gains to end flat at RMB 14,240 per tonne in overnight trading. Recovering demand, low social inventories and high spot premiums remain supportive to SHFE aluminium, with the August contract expected to trade at RMB 14,000-14,400 per tonne today.
