AlCircle has added a new Sector Focus Report - “Energy Consumption in Aluminium Smelting and Changing Technologies Towards Gas Emission” to its 2020 portfolio. The report promises to provide a deep insight into energy consumption by the primary aluminium sector and various technological developments with respect to optimising power consumption as well as reducing greenhouse emissions.
World primary aluminium production increased from 37.7 million tonnes in 2009 to 63.7 million tonnes in 2019. This growth in expected to continue in the coming years on higher demand. To produce one tonne of aluminium the average total energy (AC) intensity across the world stood at about 14.2 MWh while the average process energy intensity stood at 13.4 MWh. Globally, the aluminium industry emits around 450 MT per annum of CO2 equivalents, accounting for about 1% of the world’s total emission.

On the other hand, increasing global concerns over climate change and stringent emission norms will pose major challenges for the use of primary aluminium in the coming years. Aluminium producers have been working towards reducing energy consumption and emissions in their smelters. The report - “Energy Consumption in Aluminium Smelting and Changing Technologies Towards Gas Emission” also analyses the sources of power supply to aluminium smelters and developments in usage of clean energy in the production of primary metal.
Many companies have been investing in R&D and pilot projects to reduce energy consumption in primary aluminium facilities. They are also working on initiatives to achieve energy reduction and emission targets to further aid the aluminium metal to expand its market.
In a nutshell, the report covers the following points:
