Startup venture Kimbo has launched a Tacoma-sized, riveted-aluminium mini-lodge. Kimbo’s adventure truck camper comes with brushed fabric walls, bare aluminium and a teak-floor entry. Kimbo was set up by Mark King, an inventor and entrepreneur who wanted to design a mobile home for the outdoors. The Kimbo team rolled out its first built-to-order campers last year. Kimbo's camper is an alternative style of live-in pickup topper made of lightweight aluminium and it is simple, cosy and comfortable.
The 6 series camper tops midsize pickup trucks like the Toyota Tacoma. The riveted brushed-aluminium shell features a striking frameless, faceted design. The chassis is designed keeping in mind two purposes; the first is giving a seamless artistic look and second is keeping the base weight below 1,000 lb or 454 kg without compromising on strength. The company claims their aluminium, frameless construction to be durable and lightweight.
The cold and rugged aluminium body covers a warm, rustic interior that makes it a cosy home away from home. The Kimbo camper's interior walls are made of riveted brushed fabric which mirrors the exterior's riveted aluminium. The design is seamlessly integrated with the actual aluminium material fitted at the interior surfaces and the doors. What is to be noted here is that the exterior shell and interior panelling are two separate layers that sandwich R5 insulation for a comfortable stay.
The 6 series midsize pickup camper is commercially available now and each piece is made to order by Kimbo. The Bellingham, Washington-based company is currently producing its 6 foot campers for mid-size trucks and is working on its 8 foot full size truck version to be launched in late spring.
