United States President, Donald Trump declared that tariffs on some imported aluminium products will rise from next month.

Trump has issued a decree alleging that manufacturers from some countries are evading existing import tariffs by shipping derivative goods instead of raw metal.
On 24th January’20, the White House issued the declaration which hikes the duties on derivative aluminium by 10%. Countries like Argentina, Australia, Canada and Mexico are spared from the new aluminium tariffs.
The declaration notes an unusual rise in imports of derivative aluminium since the initial round of tariff hike prompted 3 years ago by the Administration’s Section 232 investigation.
Trump justified in the announcement: “The net effect of the increase of imports of these derivatives has been to erode the customer base for U.S. producers of aluminium and steel and undermine the purpose of the proclamations adjusting imports of aluminium and steel articles to remove the threatened impairment of the national security.”
“As detailed in the Secretary’s reports, domestic production capacity to produce aluminium articles and steel articles for national defence and critical infrastructure is essential to United States national security.”
Trump at his conclusion communicated: “Based on the Secretary’s assessments, I have concluded that it is necessary and appropriate in light of our national security interests to adjust the tariffs imposed by previous proclamations to apply to the derivatives of aluminium articles and steel articles described in Annex I and Annex II to this proclamation. This action is necessary and appropriate to address circumvention that is undermining the effectiveness of the adjustment of imports made in Proclamation 9704 and Proclamation 9705, as amended, and to remove the threatened impairment of the national security of the United States found in those proclamations.”
The new round of increased imports on derivative aluminium products will come into effect from 8th February’20.
