Alcoa, Century Aluminium, and Rio Tinto Alcan are the three notable aluminium smelters in Iceland. In the year 1969, Iceland started producing aluminium in Straumsvík (South Coast). During the first year, the production capacity was at 33 thousand tonnes, which currently is at 850 thousand tonnes (including both aluminium non-alloy and alloy) every year on average. The country exports a lion share of its production, accounting for 14 per cent of total exports of goods and services, as of Q3 2017.

{alcircleadd}The below graph shows the growth of Iceland’s aluminium and aluminium products export over the years:

According to the global export-import data, the estimated aluminium export from Iceland in Q1 2017 was at 188,522 tonnes, 12 per cent up from the estimated volume of 167,815 tonnes in the contemporary period of the previous year. In the first quarter of 2018, the estimated amount of aluminium export from Iceland grew further to 200,663 tonnes, 19 per cent up from Q1 2016 and 6 per cent up from Q1 2017. This shows that the aluminium export from Iceland grew in the first quarter of the past three years.

As far as the revenue is concerned, Iceland likely earned around US$ 322 million in Q1 2018 from its aluminium export.
The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic are the few importers who secure aluminium from Iceland. Among them, the Netherlands is expected to procure the highest amount this year at approximately 790,527 tonnes, followed by the United Kingdom (53671 tonnes) and Czech Republic (11858 tonnes).
The total amount of aluminium export from Iceland is expected to be at 858,022 tonnes in the entire year of 2018, as the global data shows.
