Hydro Energy and Hydro Extrusions business areas reported record quarterly results based on strong global economic recovery that boosted demand for renewable energy, aluminium, and aluminium products. According to the report released, Hydro’s primary aluminium production in Q1 2021 stood at 539,000 tonnes, which reflected an increase of 1 per cent from 532,000 tonnes in Q4 2020 and 2 per cent from 528,000 tonnes in Q1 2020. Realised aluminium price on LME was 11 per cent higher quarter-on-quarter and 13 per cent on the year to US$ 1,993 per tonne, resulting in Hydro’s higher revenue to NOK 31,951 million in Q1 2021. Adjusted EBITDA of the company in the same quarter grew from NOK 3,403 million in Q4 2020 to NOK 5,182 million.

Hydro’s higher aluminium extrusions sales volumes to 338,000 tonnes in Q1 2021 also contributed to the company’s increased revenue earnings. Hydro's Ajusted EBITDA from aluminium extrusions grew 67 per cent from NOK 1,044 million in Q4 2020 to NOK 1,744 million in Q1 2021, while EBITDA from primary aluminium gained 25 per cent from NOK 1,432 million in the previous quarter to NOK 1,754 million in Q1 2021.
Hydro Energy also experienced a record quarter, driven by higher power prices, production volumes, and the expiry of legacy power contracts. Adjusted EBITDA earned from Hydro Energy skyrocketed 100 per cent Q-o-Q from NOK 419 million to NOK 841 million in the first quarter. On a year-on-year calculation, it surged 66 per cent from NOK 505 million.
The reopening of economies and substantial fiscal stimulus resulted in decreasing oversupply in the primary aluminium market. So, analysts now expect a largely balanced market for 2021.
“I am pleased to see earnings and returns picking up across most of our operations on higher margins and volumes, but also on continued low costs, especially in Extrusions,” said Hydro President and CEO Hilde Merete Aasheim.
According to Hydro’s report, the company has set out a clear strategic direction toward 2025, aiming at strengthening its position in low-carbon aluminium while exploring new growth opportunities in renewable energy.
The quarter also saw a strong demand for Hydro’s low-carbon aluminium products - Hydro CIRCAL and Hydro REDUXA. The volume of Hydro REDUXA sold in the first quarter was approximately 60 percent of the total Hydro REDUXA volume sold in 2020.
