As it was stated in a press release published by the company, the investment will be solely dedicated to expanding GM's production capacity of EV-specified aluminium unit castings to suffice with the emerging demand for GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV standardised pickups.

The Vice President- Manufacturing and Labour Relations of General Motors, North America, Phil Kienle, stated that the Bedford operation is one of the most renowned aluminium die-casting facilities globally, and this auxiliary investment would catapult the Bedford team and their intensive labour to the desired success levels.

"The investment helps build job security for our Bedford team for years to come as we continue to prepare our entire manufacturing footprint for an all-electric future,' Phil Kienle claimed.

The President of the United Auto Workers (UAW), Ray Curry, commented: "'UAW local members' skill, training and craftsmanship contribute to the success of this facility, and this investment highlights the role they will play in GM's future EV growth."

In 2021, during the month of December, General Motors announced a hefty US$51 million investment initiative to be taken for the Bedford unit to install new high-end machinery, enhancing the capacity of the aluminium die-casting facility.

The newly implemented equipment readily aids the drive unit castings production for the Chevrolet Silverado EV and several additional casting opportunities.

With the above-mentioned addition, the one million square foot facility began to make electric drive unit castings utilised for the GMC Hummer pickup model.

Future of the Global Aluminium Castings Industry

Beginning in 2011, General Motors has spent almost US$456 million to enhance its Bedford Casting Operations. The plant was founded in 1942, and now it hosts over 680 hourly or salaried employees who take care of the die-casting processes that create cylinder blocks, structural components, transmission cases and drive unit housings applied in Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC automobiles.
