German downstream aluminium exports fall 13% in H1 2026 but US enters top 5 with 228.1% import surge

Germany’s downstream aluminium export map underwent a noticeable shift in H1 2026. Shipments to the world fell, with most of Germany’s traditional European customers taking less aluminium downstream product. Yet, amid that broad retreat, one market moved in the opposite direction: the United States. German downstream aluminium exports to the world fell to 897,773.19 tonnes in H1 2026 from 1 million tonnes in H1 2025, a decline of 13 per cent year on year. The contrast was particularly sharp in the US market. American imports of German downstream aluminium reached 68,061.61 tonnes in H1 2026, up 228.1 per cent from just 20,743.62 tonnes in H1 2025. The increase of more than 47,000 tonnes was enough to push the US into Germany’s top 5 destinations for the first time. The export map is...

Caustic soda plant setup in India: How aluminium growth is reshaping demand, costs and opportunities

Caustic soda may not be the most visible ingredient in aluminium production, but without it, the journey from bauxite to alumina would look very different. The chemical, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a crucial reagent in the Bayer process, where it helps dissolve alumina-bearing material in bauxite and separate it from impurities. The dissolved material is then processed to recover alumina, which ultimately feeds aluminium production. That makes caustic soda more than just another industrial chemical. Its availability, price and efficient use can influence the economics of alumina refining and, by extension, the wider aluminium value chain. As India expands its alumina and aluminium capacity, the requirement for this chemical is also becoming increasingly important. For companies...

Nomura says aluminum rally is overdone

Alcoa shares trended down Thursday after one analyst said the worldwide aluminum market has slipped into an oversupply that will persist into 2015. Alcoa shares are up more than 50 percent year to date, hit a high of $17.22 last month, but has been in retreat in recent days. Nomura's Curt Woodworth said oversupply of the metal is causing weakness in spot prices which is also seen persisting into next year. "Aluminum's recent rally has been overdone," Woodworth said in a note, adding that he expects the metal will retreat to $0.82 per pound. The price recently crossed $0.91 per pound or $2,000 per metric ton. Investors have been buying up aluminum and storing it in warehouses that aren't registered with the London Metals Exchange and Woodworth sees a risk to prices if these stocks enter...

Restricted supply to keep Aluminum prices elevated in Q3 2014: FastMarkets

The Quarterly Analysis and Forecast report on Aluminum published by FastMarkets and Sucden Financial forecasts elevated prices and premiums during the third quarter of the current year primarily on account of restricted supply of the metal. According to the report, the downward trend in Aluminum has ended in early-February this year when the prices touched the bottom of $1,671.25 per tonne. Since then, the prices have been moving in an upward trend. The trend is expected to sustain during Q3 2014. However, forward selling by marginal producers are likely to keep the prices capped in the range of $2,000 per tonne. The effect of closure of existing facilities is likely to be offset by the new capacities in the Middle East region. Some local governments in China too are seen focused on...

Mercedes Benz and Renault replace aluminum pistons with steel pistons

Aluminum, which is a material that modern diesel engine pistons have been using may get replaced by steel. Mercedes Benz and Renault are two such big automaker who are replacing aluminum pistons in diesel engines with steel ones. This change will make diesel engines more fuel efficient to the tune of 3% with CO2 emissions also being reduced by 3%. The specific output of modern day turbo diesel engines are rising due to improved common rail injection systems and turbocharging. More power means more stress on materials uses to build engines. Steel is stronger than aluminum. So the metal may replace aluminum in pistons.

Aluminium down 0.4% on global cues

Aluminium prices fell by 0.36% to INR 124.50 per kg in futures trading today as speculators reduced their positions amid weak global cues. Further, subdued demand in the domestic spot markets also weighed on the metal prices. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, aluminium for delivery in August shed 45 paise, or 0.36%, to INR 124.50 per kg in business turnover of 440 lots. Similarly, the metal for delivery in September traded lower by 30 paise, or 0.32%, to INR 125.25 per kg in 367 lots. Globally, aluminum fell 0.2% to $2,048 per tonne at the London Metal Exchange. A356 Aluminum alloy processing fees in China to Stabilize in August following July’s uptick

Processing fees for A356 aluminum alloy in China are expected to stabilize between 700-750 yuan ($114-122) per tonne in August after July’s slight rise, Shanghai Metals Market foresees. Tight supply, high production costs and limited demand growth will keep processing charges for the wheel making ingredient stable in August, SMM estimates. Falling supply and rising aluminum prices were major contributors to the 50 yuan/tonne rise in processing fees in July. Some alloy makers cut output against high production costs, while others shifted to aluminum bar production for decent sales. As a consequence, the average operating rate at the surveyed alloy makers slipped month-on-month to 66.88% in July, causing the monthly output to drop 1,000 tonnes from a month ago to 107,000 tonnes.

Sumitomo joins Goldman in expectation of the aluminum market swinging into a deficit

The global aluminum market will swing into a deficit this year for the first time since 2006 as cuts in output deepen and demand from automakers grow, according to trading house Sumitomo Corp. Global consumption will outpace supply by 61,000 metric tons in 2014, flipping from a surplus of 580,000 tons last year, said Shingi Yamagiwa, Sumitomo’s manager of light metals trading. The deficit will widen to 493,000 tons in 2015, he said. Sumitomo, which owns stakes in smelters from Malaysia and Australia to Brazil, joins Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in predicting demand will overtake supply this year. The world will face a 579,000 ton shortfall after seven years of oversupply and low prices resulted in the closing or curtailment of 50 smelters, Goldman Sachs said in a July 23 report. Citigroup...

Ghana’s export revenues from gold, bauxite, diamond and manganese in the period was US$2.143 billion, down from US$2.477 billion in the first half of 2013. Bauxite revenue increased significantly, by 78 percent, on account of the substantial rise in shipments of the ore which went up by 108.4 percent. Shipments rose from 292,778 tonnes to 610,074 tonnes in the period. Alfred Baku, Executive Vice President of Gold Fields’ West Africa Operations, has said mining investments are under threat as companies are cancelling new projects and closing mines due to pressure from price-dips, cost increases and higher taxes. “Equity investors have become frustrated as miners have...

SFU Canada organizes Zero Waste President's BBQ

For the second year in a row, the 2014 President’s BBQ was a Zero Waste event, with no waste delivered to the landfill. Thanks to the combined efforts of the SFU Sustainability Office, Facilities Services, Dining Services; Meetings, Events and Conference Services and Human Resources, all 100 lbs. of food waste and compostables were sent to Westcoast Instant Lawns’ “envirosmart organic” composting facility in Delta. Thirty-eight lbs. of aluminum cans were sent to Urban Impact’s Materials Recovery Facility in New Westminster. Rachel Telling, SFU’s zero waste coordinator, says diverting these materials from the landfill has significant environmental and economic benefits. “Recycling 38 lbs. of aluminum cans will save enough energy to power a TV for almost five months or listen to 1,140 full...
