The latest escalation in the US-Canada trade dispute is putting pressure on one of North America's most deeply integrated manufacturing networks, with auto-parts makers facing higher costs and growing uncertainty over where and how components should be produced. The two countries have spent decades building an automotive supply chain in which parts and materials routinely cross the border multiple times before reaching a finished vehicle. The latest tariff measures, including duties on aluminium and steel, threaten to disrupt that model and could force suppliers to reconsider long-established production routes. The immediate challenge for automakers and their suppliers is deciding whether to absorb higher costs in the short term or make expensive changes to their supply chains. For...

On November 22, South Korea-based LG Chem declared that it would make a US$3 billion investment to construct a battery cathode factory in Tennessee to suffice the emerging demand for electric vehicle (EV) components. Early in August, a US law was passed making automakers, and battery suppliers solely depend on China for sourcing at a cost disadvantage. Since then, this has been the first major South Korean investment in the United States to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company claimed that the unit will produce an estimated 120,000 tonnes of cathode materials by 2027, ample to run almost 1.2 million electric vehicles. The new plant will produce batteries with nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminium (NCMA) chemistry. The NCMA battery consists of almost 90 per cent nickel...

Barbeau Desrosiers, a Montreal-based design company, has designed a new S6000 Bench using industrial scrap. The company has used extruded aluminium to make the bench and proved that scraps can be utilised to create something useful. “A single square extrusion divided into four sections makes up the bench. Three pieces serve as legs, and the other one recut symmetrically, creates the seat. The assembly, composed of three threaded rods and six nuts, is minimal and invisible,” said the design company. According to the company, using aluminium extrusion to make the bench explores the recovery potential of industrial profiles by devising new applications for them to produce unique things. Aluminium extrusion is one of the most popular forms of aluminium products. Extruded aluminium products...
