EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

After an incredible 62-year run of smelting operations, the German Speira company is embarking on a transformative journey. In a bold and forward-thinking move, the company has decided to cease the production of primary aluminium by the end of 2023, with the last of the potlines scheduled to be shut down by December.

The closure of the aluminium smelting operations marks a turning point in Speira's history, and the company is now embracing a pioneering concept. The iconic Rheinwerk facility, once the heart of their aluminium production, is transforming remarkably into a state-of-the-art recycling-based foundry.

This visionary shift aligns Speira with the principles of sustainability, eco-consciousness, and a circular economy. The company is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and minimizing waste while taking a giant leap forward in resource conservation.

As the company reimagines the Rheinwerk facility, it is preserving the legacy of its historical smelting operations and pioneering innovative and eco-friendly aluminium production techniques. With a focus on recycling and utilizing advanced technologies, Speira is poised to set new standards in the industry, leading the way toward a greener and more sustainable future.

Speira's decision to transition from traditional smelting to a recycling-based foundry is not just a concept; it reflects their commitment to a better, more environmentally responsible world. This forward-thinking approach is reshaping the company and inspiring others to follow suit, making the world a cleaner and more sustainable place for generations to come.

Global Aluminium Industry Key Trends to 2030

The district council's resolution, passed on September 27, 2023, aimed at enhancing the framework for energy-intensive companies and the ongoing national dialogue regarding a "bridge electricity price," unfortunately arrives too late for Rheinwerk. During a work meeting on September 28, 2023, Christoph Budde, the Plant Manager, and Volker Backs, the Head of Public Affairs, Energy, Trade and  Managing Director of Speira, delivered the sad news to the workforce. After a remarkable 62 years of operation, the smelter will cease the production of primary aluminium. The last of the 162 presently active potlines will be deactivated no later than December 15. This decision will lead to a substantial reduction in the 700-strong workforce, nearly halving its size.
