Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), one of the largest companies in the UAE, has accomplished the expansion of Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi to enhance production capacity at the facility by 78,000 tonnes per year.
Abdulnasser bin Kalban, CEO of EGA said: “The completion of this expansion project adds to our production capacity amid strong demand for aluminium as the world builds back better from Covid-19. The expansion was delivered below budget and on schedule.”
“All 2,843 reduction cells at EGA use our own efficient technology developed in the UAE, an important source of competitive advantage and pride for us as a leader in the global aluminium industry."
Mubadala Investment Company, Abu Dhabi’s strategic investment arm and the Investment Corporation of Dubai are the joint owners of EGA. However, in H1 2021, the company sold 1.18 million tonnes of aluminium to customers in more than 50 countries, while in 2020 it sold 2.52 million tonnes.
As the global economies are attempting to rebound to the pre-pandemic phase, the demand for aluminium surged at a high pace, which navigated the price to touch and cross $3000 per tonne, though it calmed to $2,555 per tonne on 5th November 2021.
EGA said: “The expansion of Al Taweelah smelter was completed in three phases with the company's own technology. It commissioned the first phase in April and the second in July.”
“EGA has used its own technology in every smelter expansion since the 1990s and has retrofitted all its older production lines,” it added.
