China’s aluminum semis exports grow less than expected to 280,000 tonnes in June

China’s aluminum semis exports did not grow as much as expected in June, Shanghai Metals Market learned. Outbound shipments rose only 2.9% from a year ago to 280,000 tonnes. Overseas buyers continued to push for lower prices, squeezing Chinese producer margins. Besides, many processors preferred to maintain stable domestic sales as a hedge against interruptions in exports. Both factors constrained the growth in export volumes, SMM understood. Exports by segment in June are detailed as below: Segment Quantity (Tonne) YoY Extrusion 69,500 43.55% Foil 69,900 7.77% Plate/sheet 125,200 -13.99%

Sapa in new offshore application

A lot of aluminium extrusions from Sapa are used offshore. System 2000 Group in England has just developed an extrusion-based application that protects employees during drilling operations and enables 100 percent drilling productivity. The development process began when one of Sapa’s long-standing customers, System 2000 Group (S2G), was approached by Rigmar Services of Aberdeen, to design and manufacture an automatic horizontal roller shutter door on the Rowan Norway drilling rig. Once installed, the system would allow the rig to drill via an offshore installation with zero downtime, by protecting the workforce on the lower deck during drilling operations. S2G called Sapa at an early stage to assist with their extrusion design. Rigmar Services, an innovative projects and service provider...

GM moves next version of big pickups ahead by nine months - sources

General Motors Co. (GM) has pushed forward the launch of its next-generation full-size pickups by about nine months to fall 2018, hoping to narrow rival Ford Motor Co.'s still-sizable lead in meeting future US fuel-economy standards, supplier sources said on Monday (July 28). Redesigned versions of GM's full-size sport-utility vehicles are expected to follow about a year later, the two sources said. GM officials declined to comment on future product plans. Like Ford with its all-new 2015 F-150, GM is dramatically lightening the next versions of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, which are being developed under a program known to suppliers as T1XX, or T1 for short. The first versions of the current redesigned pickups debuted last year, and GM is introducing sport utility...

Operating rates at Chinese aluminum fabricators expected to fall in July

The average operating rate at Chinese aluminum fabricators is expected to slide in July, Shanghai Metals Market foresees. FRPs The average operating rate will likely inch down to 60% at plate/sheet, strip and foil segments in July. The arrival of the traditional off-season has caused orders to contract across the FRP sector. This has been exacerbated by the central government’s anti-corruption efforts, which are deterring end users, such as power companies, from purchasing larger volumes of aluminum FRPs, SMM has learned. Weaker demand should drag down operating rates across the sector. Operating rates, however, are unlikely to fall dramatically as some fabricators are taking orders with thin to no margins to maintain stable output, SMM understands. Extrusions The average operating rate...

Rogers aluminum wheels plant closing down with 500 job loss

Superior Industries International, Inc. , the largest manufacturer of aluminum wheels for passenger cars and light-duty vehicles in North America, today announced it will close its manufacturing facility in Rogers, Arkansas, as part of an initiative to reduce costs and enhance its global competitive position. The company said it expects to cease operations at Rogers by the end of this year. Cheap imports affect Aluworks’ market share

Aluworks Limited, the aluminium products manufacturer, says its market share has shrunk as cheap imported substitutes continue to undercut its business. Kwadwo Kwarteng, board chairman, told the B&FT in Accra on the sidelines of this year's annual general meeting that the company’s market share has dropped from 25 percent in 2012 to 15 percent currently. He blamed this on the inability of government to introduce countervailing measures that local manufacturers have proposed against cheap and poor-quality imports. "The influx of cheap aluminium imports from the Far East into the Ghanaian market is seriously affecting our business; the situation is seriously eroding our market share and we want it to be stopped. "We have asked government to increase the duty on cheap imports as a...

Hulamin H1 results spring growth

Hulamin Limited’s plans to bank on its growing profitability as a recovery in its manufacturing figures continue. “Our manufacturing performance showed some improvement with recoveries increasing off a low base. Sales of rolled products are up by 9 per cent from the second half of last year which, together with a slight improvement in conversion margins, underpinned our earnings growth, supported by the weaker rand,” David Austin, acting CEO of Hulamin, said in a statement. “This improved profitability, together with sound working capital management, produced strong cash flows that we used to pay down borrowings. Our efforts to improve operational performance are ongoing and should contribute to increased volumes and profitability in the second half.” Hulamin -2.08% is an international...
