Production of hydrogen by oxidation of active metals, and particularly aluminum and its alloys, is and has been studied by many universities and research centers. The main problem that scientists have been trying to solve is the formation of an oxide film on the surface of the active metals which interrupts oxidation reaction and therefore stops production of hydrogen. “We know that the investigators who used aluminum powder in their research achieved positive results,” says Balakiryan. But the greatest success achieved in this direction has been the Purdue University scientist under the leadership of Prof. Jerry Woodall. They developed a method that uses an aluminum alloy to extract hydrogen from water for running fuel cells or internal combustion engines. They believe that this...

Vedanta-owned Bharat Aluminium Co, one of India's top private sector aluminium producers, has shut its rolling mill at Korba in Chhattisgarh due to a slump in metal prices and competition from cheap imports from China. Vedanta's alumina refinery at Lanjigarh in Odisha, which has been struggling to source its main raw material, bauxite since inception, could be next in line to meet a similar fate, top sources with knowledge of the situation at the company. For both these facilities reeling under shrinking margins, the devaluation of the Chinese currency last week has come as the last straw as it threatens to increase imports. "We have been forced to take this tough decision (on closing the rolling mill) last week as the situation is economically untenable. In the backdrop of a crash in...

Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a division of Federal-Mogul, has developed a new premium diesel piston aluminium alloy, called DuraForm-G91. In benchmarking tests, the new alloy provides between three and five times the component life of established as-cast materials in modern, highly loaded, diesel engines. The increased strength of the new material also supports higher mechanical loads, allowing engines to operate at higher specific power and more efficiently. The enhanced alloy properties facilitate piston designs with a lower compression height and reduced mass. The resulting benefits of less reciprocating mass and smaller, lighter cylinder blocks contribute to vehicle CO2 emissions reduction. "This is an example of the enabling technologies developed by Federal-Mogul Powertrain that help...

The innovative new Jaguar XE claims to be the most fuel efficient vehicle its segment. Designed around Jaguar’s modular vehicle architecture, the XE is the only car in the class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque, with lightweight aluminium accounting for 75 per cent of the structure. This milestone in body engineering, a product of Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in high-volume production of aluminium vehicles, ensures that the Jaguar XE combines outstanding design with benchmark levels of ride and handling – it will be the true driver’s car in the segment when it launches locally, in September. Lightweight construction is a core element of Jaguar’s DNA and Jaguar is at the cutting-edge of aluminium technology in the automotive industry. The Jaguar XJ, XK and F-TYPE have all been...

DAF Trucks has created a prototype distribution truck with significantly reduced weight, resulting in lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Sapa played an integral role in this development toward improved transport efficiency. Alongside lead partner Leyland Trucks, and C.S.A Group, Sapa’s extrusion company in the United Kingdom designed and extruded the aluminium that helped create the concept vehicle. Light and strong, aluminium extrusions were used extensively throughout the chassis and combined with a number of innovative design concepts from Sapa to improve efficiency. The project was co-funded by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency. Its objective was to design and manufacture a new chassis system at least 30 percent lighter than the conventional steel chassis...

Aluminum alloy has become a top-of-choice material for new energy vehicle manufacturers in China due to its lightness. New energy vehicles are typically heavier than traditional vehicles because of heavy batteries. Fortunately, auto body made of aluminum alloy could satisfy new energy vehicles’ pressing need to reduce car weight. Traditional carmakers in China are struggling in price war triggered by poor sales, while new energy vehicle manufacturers are big winners in the market. China’s production and sales of new energy vehicles were 27,200 units and 26,500 units, respectively, in Q1, up 290% and 280% from a year ago, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). The country’s sales of new energy vehicles are poised to double to 150,000-200,000 units in 2015,...
