iPhone 6S packs in stronger aluminium alloy; passes “bendgate” test

Lightweighting is fast becoming the order of the day. Be it in the automotive sector or in the mobile handset industry, every company is now focussing on the technology that enables them to lightweight their products in order to add more value to them and stay cost effective in the long run. Apple’s iPhone is the latest brand to join the lightweighting bandwagon. It is said to have used a higher grade of aluminium in its latest iPhone 6S model. It is rumoured that the handset has passed the much hyped “bendgate” test and the feat is entirely being attributed to its aluminium alloy built which makes it sturdier and more durable than its earlier versions. China aluminium extrusion operating rate slump to continue in Aug

Operating rates at Chinese aluminum extruders will extend July’s declines in August due to sluggish property and export market, Shanghai Metals Market foresees. The average rate will be 54% for aluminum extruders, with 58% in industrial aluminum extrusion segment and 54% in construction aluminum extrusion segment, SMM’s aluminum research team said. Operating rates averaged 56.01% in July at 30 Chinese aluminum extruders surveyed by SMM, down 3.34 percentage points year-on-year and 4.16 percentage points month-on-month. Inabata and Toyo to launch anti-counterfeit blister foil

A blister foil with anti-counterfeit features developed by Japan's Toyo Aluminium will be launched at Pharma Expo next month. The blister foil technology features colour-shifting inks that can be complemented by additional semi-overt and covert features and - according to US distributor Inabata - are much cheaper than holograms or other colour-shifting ink technologies. "Our ink is banknote-grade with much cheaper price," the Inabata spokesman told SecuringIndustry.com. "Because it is cost competitive - with no similar grade in the market - and no one can copy our products vivid colour, we believe there are many advantages for consumers and pharma companies." Toyo Aluminium has been manufacturing aluminium foil since 1978 and their products are widely used in pharmaceutical and other...

Natcore swaps silver for aluminum in solar cells

Natcore swaps silver for aluminum in solar cells

Natcore has successfully eliminated silver from an all-back-contact silicon heterojunction cell, and replaced it with aluminum. No loss of performance was said to have been recorded at the company’s R&D center in Rochester, the U.S. A provisional patent application is expected to be filed in the next two weeks. Although it boasts high conductivity, silver is very expensive. And, while twice as much aluminum is needed as silver, "raw material costs would still be just 0.6% of the direct material cost of using silver in the cell," says Natcore. Currently, silver costs around US$15.28 per troy ounce – contributing to roughly 30% of a silicon cell’s production cost – whereas the same quantity of aluminum is said to cost $0.05. The average solar panel is calculated to use around one-half of an...
