Noranda on Monday said will lay off 38 employees at its Newport plant on or around December 3. Following the reduction, the facility will operate with 15 hourly and two salaried associates, compared to the workforce of 48 hourly and 7 salaried associates, according to John Parker, a company spokesman. Parker said the layoffs are part of a companywide cost-cutting effort in response to aluminum prices, which are at their lowest levels since the global financial crisis. Newport will continue to perform coating and slitting operations for coated finstock and container foil products. Although other production is being curtailed at Newport, the facility will retain the equipment capabilities to restart that production if demand warrants, Parker said. Aluminium consumption in China is expected to weaken further in 2016, Shanghai Metals Market foresees. “Utilization rates at major domestic aluminium processing enterprises are down on a yearly basis in 2015, such as aluminium plate/sheet, strip, aluminium extrusion , cast aluminium alloy , reducing aluminium consumption,” SMM’s aluminium analyst said at the 2015 Foundry Industry Conference. The decline in the rate is due largely to weak demand from major end-user sectors, including construction, real estate and automobile sectors, the analyst continued at the conference held on November 19-20 in Suzhou. “Such conditions are expected to continue into 2016, and aluminium consumption in China is then expected to fall by 1 percent from 2015,” the analyst predicted.

TaeguTec recently unveiled the XEVT 16 and 22 for high-speed machining as part of its Chase-Alu family. Aluminium has its challenges but this alloy’s high strength-to-weight ratio makes it an imperative material in many industrial fields, including automotive, aerospace and mould making. Yet, the main problems in machining aluminium remain the formation of built-up edges due to the adhesion of the materials used, Taegutec says. The cutting tool company has tackled these concerns by minimising the tendency of aluminium to stick to the tool cutting edge, ensuring good chip evacuation, and assuring the tool core strength to withstand breaking. Taegutec recently unveiled the XEVT 16 and 22 for high-speed machining as part of the Chase-Alu family that amalgamates the line’s power of machining...
