Downstream products weekly recap: Australia’s Capral Aluminium commits to attaining net-zero emissions by 2050; Novelis joins the global initiative FMC to decarbonise the aluminium industry

Many big scale industries like Capral are moving towards low emission modules since the scientific community has already declared that by mid-century, net-zero must be attained to keep global warming limited to 1.5°C, preventing harmful effects on the eco-system. Novelis Inc. has joined hands with the First Mover’s Coalition, keeping sustainability in mind to reduce carbon emissions from its aluminium production process. First Mover’s Coalition wishes to achieve net-zero by 2050 in eight ‘hard to abate’ sectors that account for 30% of the global carbon emissions.

Capral Aluminium pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. To make this happen, Capral will have to achieve net-zero emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2, with the support of new and breakthrough technological alternatives. The scientific community has said unequivocally that net-zero global CO2 emissions must be achieved by mid-century to keep global warming to 1.5°C and prevent the harmful effects of climate change on human civilization and ecosystems.

On Tuesday, May 31, Novelis Inc., the world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, announced it's joining the First Movers Coalition (FMC), a global initiative aimed at decarbonising eight “hard to abate” sectors that account for 30% of worldwide carbon emissions. By joining this platform, Novelis will contribute its effort to reducing carbon emissions from the aluminium manufacturing process, along with many other enigmatic companies from the same industry.

On 1st June 2022, the first Moroccan company specialising in the manufacture of aluminium alloy profiles Aluminium du Maroc reported a turnover of DH 213 million for Q1 2022, a sharp rise of 72% when compared to Q-o-Q for the same phase in 2021.

According to a report published by the European Aluminium Foil Association, the first quarter of 2022 witnessed robust domestic demand for European aluminium foil rolls, countervailing a continuing decline in exports. Demand in the larger domestic market segment grew by 5 per cent in the quarter, with a total production volume 0.2 per cent higher Y-o-Y to 244,700 tonnes.

Ontario, Canada based Exco Technologies Limited witnessed a significant increase in its short interest, with the total amounting to 111,400 shares as of May 15, up by 60.5 per cent from 69,400 shares recorded on April 30. China’s aluminium billet inventory plunged by 3,000 tonnes W-o-W to settle at 127,100 tonnes.  Yesterday, downstream purchases were bolstered by the sharp fall in aluminium prices and the forthcoming Dragon Boat Festival. Overall, downstream consumption has rebounded, and the market is confident that it will continue to improve. The short-term destocking trend in the aluminium billet market is projected to continue.

The globally integrated aluminium producer, Press Metal, with its largest presence in South East Asia recorded augmented sales and earnings for the first quarter till 31st March 2022. The firm’s revenue ascended to 86.6% Y-o-Y in 1Q 2022 to reach RM 3.92 billion, and the net profit heightened by 104.7% Y-o-Y to RM 421.02 million on the ground of higher production and soaring sales price.

Festo, a leading German industrial control and automation firm headquartered in Esslingen am Neckar, is providing PM Metal with new welding cells made up of aluminium as a retrofit to use in the existing systems. World recycled Aluminium Market Analysis

Hindalco Industries, an Aditya Birla Group company, recorded a historic profit of INR 13,370 crore in FY2022. The company has decided to expand its downstream segment to bring Novelis (the world's largest aluminium firm) to India by reinvesting the profits for the same. This year, the corporation has set aside a capital budget of 3,000 crores, which will be spent mostly on the continuing downstream growth.
