Coal tar pitch export from China drops MoM as supply tightens after environmental crackdown

EDITED BY : DIPANWITA GUPTA 2MINS READ

Coal tar pitch production is growing globally driven by the ferrous and non-ferrous metal sector growth. A critical binder material for anode production required in aluminium smelting through Hall Heroult method of electrolysis, CTP remains in high demand where prebaked technology is used for making aluminium. A couple of decades back West Europe and North America used to be the base of CTP production; but over the years the base has shifted to China. Today, CTP forms approximately 76 per cent of China’s total coal tar market, and coal tar pitch export forms a significant part of its GDP.

China exported 1,44,405 tonnes of CTP in the first three months of 2017. In March alone, the export quantity peaked at 85,128 tonnes. Following the wide-scale environmental pollution control checks and resultant shutdowns of carbon product manufacturing units in China, coal tar pitch export came down to 47,301 tonnes in April 2017. Till December 2016, monthly coal tar pitch export from China ranged between 33918 tonnes- 47,590 tonnes.

The top five countries which have been importing coal tar pitch, rather modified pitch, from China include UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, India, and Bahrain. From November 2016 till April 2017, UAE imported 62,314 tonnes of CTP, followed by India (37,551 tonnes), Bahrain (26,951 tonnes), Saudi (20,705 tonnes), and Qatar (19,022 tonnes).

China’s export of coal tar pitch though dropped in the recent months will pick up from the second quarter of the next calendar year onward i.e. when China has resumed operations after its winter capacity cuts. The export volumes will continue to remain at highs until the smelters outside China have managed to establish any alternative carbon raw material procurement source(s).

As of now, the demand for CTP in China domestic market remains high. This along with tightened supply will buoying up CTP prices for the rest of 2017; and the high CTP prices will add to cost of production of aluminium for smelters across China, as well as those located outside China. AlCircle is coming up with a detailed market insight titled Global Aluminium & Raw Material Market with Sectoral Focus on CPC, CTP and Prebaked Anode (2016-17)’.
