In March 2022, China’s aluminium production recorded a rise of 1.8 per cent year-on-year to stand the highest since last May 2021, buoyed by production recovery and strong profits. As per the data showed by the National Bureau of Statistics, the output in China came in at 3.3 million tonnes, reflecting a year-on-year rise of 0.73 per cent from 3.276 million tonnes.

But China’s daily average aluminium production of March was slightly down at 106,452 tonnes from the daily average of 107,288 tonnes during January-February, according to Reuters calculations based on the NBS data.
The fall in daily average output in March could be attributed to narrow demand due to the recent COVID-19 outbreaks and ensuing lockdowns in China, despite provinces like Yunnan resumed production after being hit by power cuts last year.
"Most small downstream fabricators carry aluminium with vehicles, but motor transportation in eastern China has been disrupted due to measures aimed at containing COVID infections," said Zhang Rufeng, analyst with consultancy Baiinfo.

China’s total aluminium production in the first quarter of 2022 stood at 9.63 million tonnes, down by 1.33 per cent from 9.76 million tonnes during the same period last year.
