China tops the list of aluminium foil exporters in 2016 globally

Aluminium Foil is the 275th most traded product and the 281st most complex product according to the Product Complexity Index (PCI). The 4 digit HS92 product is traded around the world to be used in cigarette package, food package, flexible package, electric package industries, etc.

The top exporters of Aluminium Foil are China, Germany, Japan and Italy. We are trying to analyse the trading patterns for all the four countries for the year 2016 with an estimated outlook for 2017. This will give us an idea about the market share of these countries in the growing foil market.

In 2016, China exported an estimated 9,63,833 tons of aluminium foil and the total value of export stood at USD 3.1 billion. In comparison to China, Germany exported 3,28,687 tons of aluminium foil in 2016 and the total revenue realization was about USD 1.3 billion. Italy and Japan are in the third and fourth position and their total aluminium foil export stood at 1,54,449 tons and 56,015 tons respectively for 2016. The total revenue realization was about USD 587 million and USD 537 million respectively.

Based on the 2016 data, an outlook for 2017 indicates that China would export an estimated 8,88,417 tons of aluminium foil for the first 11 months and the total value of export would be about USD 2.8 billion. In comparison to China, Germany would export 3,20,507 tons of aluminium foil in 2017 and the total revenue realization would be about USD 1.1 billion. Italy and Japan are in the third and fourth position and their total aluminium foil export will stand at 1,48,295 tons and 51,806 tons respectively for 2017. The total revenue realization would be about USD 460 million for both the countries.

China’s colossal growth in aluminium production has changed the market dynamics for aluminium in recent years. The impact of this growth was initially faced by the primary sector. Slowly; Chinese imports are taking over a large share in the downstream market that supply aluminium foils.

Most of the countries are falling prey to the tough competition from the Chinese import. The Chinese export is not only cheaper; they are also of good quality and can be easily customised to the client’s requirement.  This makes it convenient for end –users to import aluminium foils from China. The top importers from China happen to be USA, Canada and Germany.
