China-based China Aluminum International Engineering Co., Ltd. (CHALIECO) has won a bid for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract valued at approximately USD 833 million for a proposed alumina project in Vietnam, adding to investment activity in the country’s mineral processing sector.

The project, being developed by Binh Phuoc Ore Mining and Beneficiation Joint Stock Company, is designed to process 2.4 million tonnes of alumina annually. The proposed contract is valued at around CNY 5.595 billion (USD 839.04 million), with completion expected within 27 months of the contract’s effective date.

CHALIECO to oversee turnkey refinery development

Under the proposed turnkey arrangement, CHALIECO’s responsibilities will cover the full project delivery process, from engineering design and equipment procurement to construction, installation and commissioning.

The scope also includes the supply of materials and personnel training, placing the Chinese engineering company in charge of multiple stages of the planned alumina refinery’s development.

The 27-month schedule is expected to begin from the contract’s effective date. However, the final contract value and implementation terms have not yet been confirmed.

Overseas expansion offers potential business growth

CHALIECO said the project could expand its overseas business and support future earnings if the contract is formally signed and implemented as planned.

The proposed agreement represents a potential opportunity for the company to strengthen its international project portfolio through a major alumina-processing development in Vietnam.

However, the project remains subject to risks associated with overseas operations, including regulatory changes, foreign exchange controls and local economic conditions. The company’s anticipated business and earnings benefits therefore depend on the contract being finalised and carried out as planned.
