On November 15, 2021, Century Aluminium Company (NASDAQ: CENX) stated that Norurál Grundartangi ehf ("Norurál"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Century Aluminium Company (NASDAQ: CENX), and Qair, an independent renewable power producer, have signed a letter of intent for the supply of green electricity to the Grundartangi smelter originating from two of Qair's windfarms with a total installed capacity of 200 MW under development in Iceland.

The two firms have also agreed to collaborate on the development of a CO2 capture technology for the Grundartangi smelter. If the project is successful, the collected CO2 will be utilised to produce eFuel in conjunction with Qair's hydrogen facility, which is being built close to Grundartangi.
“At Century we are committed to the highest possible environmental standards across all of our operations, as evidenced by our continued focus on reducing the carbon footprint of our aluminium products and working to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. Our cooperation with Qair at Grundartangi could prove to become an important step in our journey to lower carbon emissions,” said Gunnar Guðlaugsson, Executive Vice President, Global Operations and Managing Director of Norðurál.
Grundartangi produces Natur-AlTM aluminium, which has one of the lowest CO2 footprints in the world, using Iceland's 100 percent renewable energy resources. Natur-AlTM has a CO2 concentration that is less than a fourth of that of the industry norm, meeting the rising demand from Europe's most ecologically aware customers. The firm is committed to reducing its environmental effect even more, and is accredited for responsible production by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). Qair plans to construct, build, own, and manage two wind farms with a combined installed capacity of 200 MW, supplying electricity to Grundartangi under a power purchase agreement.
