Boucheron, a prominent Parisian jewellery firm, is strengthening its environmental efforts. The Kering group brand has launched a global push to provide exclusively sustainable jewellery boxes for its items. Boucheron chose aluminium for the outside casing of their jewel boxes because it is lightweight, sturdy, and endlessly recyclable.
The boxes are made of aluminium and have a consistently carved mesh of emerald-cut design to reflect the layout of Place Vendôme from above. The aluminium jewellery boxes are already used at Boucheron's main Paris' Place Vendôme shop. Boucheron intends to use eco-friendly boxes in its global stores by 2024. There are no non-recyclable metal hinges or other connecting pieces in the box. Inside the box, the jewellery is wrapped in wool-felt without glue or stitching, making it easier to separate aluminium throughout the recycling process.
"We are reimagining jewellery packaging to favour lightness and more responsible materials over opulence," added Boucheron's CEO Hélène Poulit-Duquesne.
Sustainability is an ever-changing purpose for the worldwide jewellery sector as customers become more aware of the environmental effect of their purchasing habits. For jewellery companies, investigating the origins of their raw materials is only one step in reducing their environmental impact.
