Belgium’s aluminium scrap import to see a further growth in 2018 but clocked downfall in Q1

The international export-import data shows that the total volume of aluminium scrap imported to Belgium has been rising over the past few years. In 2016, Belgium had imported about 2, 75, 996 tonnes of aluminium scrap in total, while in 2017, the import volume increased 6.4 per cent to 2, 95, 076 tonnes. This year is estimated to be no exception as well. In 2018, the scrap import volume to Belgium is likely to rise even further to 2, 99, 165 tonnes, 1.38 per cent higher from 2017 and 8.39 per cent higher from 2016.

The import value is also expected to increase in 2018 to stand at US$ 264 million from that of US$ 246 million in 2017. In 2016, the import value was higher than 2017 at US$ 251 million despite the lower import volume, but down from the expected import value in 2018.

However, in contrast to the estimated trend for the entire year of 2018, Belgium’s import volume in Q1 reportedly decreased from the corresponding period of both 2017 but remained higher than that of 2016. In Q1 2017, Belgium’s scrap import in Q1 2016 was at 67,862 tonnes, which grew to 84, 174 tonnes in the same period of 2017, up 19 per cent. But this year in the first quarter, the country unfortunately, could not maintain the quarter-on-quarter growing trend but registered a narrower volume at 72,954 tonnes, down 13 per cent from Q1 2017 but up 7.5 per cent from Q1 2016.
