International Responsible Business Conduct (IRBC) has completed a project examining aluminium and bauxite supply chains to improve transparency and traceability in materials supporting the renewable energy transition. The project brought together wind energy company Siemens Gamesa, Dutch cable manufacturer TKF, Digital Product Passport (DPP) technology provider Minespider, and project partner Responsible Trade. Mount Ridley Mines has reported 94.9 per cent gallium recovery from a third-party bauxite sample using its patent-pending Selectro process, alongside recoveries of 92 per cent aluminium and 97 per cent iron in a single low-temperature leach. The test also produced a silica-rich residue instead of conventional red mud, highlighting the technology’s potential to recover multiple metals from bauxite through one processing route. The sample was provided by Australian Silica Quartz Group from its Darling Range bauxite project in Western Australia. In 2019, Guyana is expected to export 1.42 million tonnes of bauxite, out of its total estimated export volume of 2 million tonnes. Last year, the country’s bauxite export to Ukraine was at 1.17 million tonnes, indicating a growth of 21 per cent year-on-year in 2019. Australian Bauxite Limited (ABx) is a step closer to selling high-value aluminium fluoride to Australian aluminium smelters, as its subsidiary ALCORE has proven to be able to chemically refine the company’s bauxite and its components into aluminium fluoride and several other valuable co-products. ABx said ALCORE aims to convert low-grade bauxite worth $50 per tonne into valuable products worth more than $800 per tonne. It has been reported that the Odisha government is yet to put the state’s bauxite blocks into auction. According to the Ministry of Mines website, till now, six bauxite blocks have been offered for competitive bidding this year and those are all located in Maharashtra. Indonesia has announced that it would ban exports of nickel from the country from 1 January 2020 next year, two years ahead of the slated timeline. Local media report also says that Indonesia is also considering expediting its ban on bauxite exports. With the enforcement of the standard operating procedure (SOP) for bauxite mining and export in Pahang, interested parties can now apply for mining licence, Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar said. The miners need to adhere to the SOP in order to get the approval from the Pahang state government to carry out mining in the state. The Malaysian government has finalized the standard operating procedure (SOP) for bauxite mining and export activities in Pahang with immediate effect. Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr A.
