International Responsible Business Conduct (IRBC) has completed a project examining aluminium and bauxite supply chains to improve transparency and traceability in materials supporting the renewable energy transition. The project brought together wind energy company Siemens Gamesa, Dutch cable manufacturer TKF, Digital Product Passport (DPP) technology provider Minespider, and project partner Responsible Trade. Mount Ridley Mines has reported 94.9 per cent gallium recovery from a third-party bauxite sample using its patent-pending Selectro process, alongside recoveries of 92 per cent aluminium and 97 per cent iron in a single low-temperature leach. The test also produced a silica-rich residue instead of conventional red mud, highlighting the technology’s potential to recover multiple metals from bauxite through one processing route. The sample was provided by Australian Silica Quartz Group from its Darling Range bauxite project in Western Australia. It comprised material collected from 16 vacuum drill samples across four holes at the Athena and Ceres prospects. According to the data shown by the US Geological Survey on bauxite and alumina imports in the first quarter of 2020, the United States imported 775,000 tonnes of crude and dried bauxite, down by 22.5 per cent from 1 million tonnes of imports in the fourth quarter of 2019. However, when compared to the data year ago, the United States’ bauxite imports in Q1 2020 stood higher by 3.61 per cent. Hydro has revealed a volumetric update for its business areas for April and May, ahead of the complete second-quarter financial results. The company shows it manufactured 1,760 tonnes of bauxite during April-May compared to 910 tonnes during the corresponding period last year. This means Hydro’s bauxite output in the second-quarter-to-date of 2020 increased by 94 per cent year-on-year, owing to the growing production at the Paragominas bauxite mine. Ukraine decreased the import of aluminium ore and concentrate (bauxite) by 9% in January-May’20 compared to the same period in 2019, to 1.945 million tonnes. According to statistics released by the State Customs Service, bauxite imports in monetary terms decreased by 8.2%, to $85.069 million during that period. The import was mainly made from Guinea (67.77% of supplies in monetary terms), Guyana (15.02%) and Ghana (8.49%). In January-May’20, some 70 tonnes of bauxite worth $11,000 were re-exported to Poland, while in January-May 2019 Ukraine supplied 22 tonnes of bauxite worth $1,000 to Poland.
According to a Reuters report, Aluminum Corp of China Ltd , also known as Chalco, has received a license for its 100,000-square-metre bonded bauxite warehouse in Guangxi region in southern China.
