Guinea has asked state-owned China Power Investment (CPI) to build a 340 MW coal-fired power plant in the electricity-starved west African state, its mines minister said. The project is part of ongoing negotiations between Guinea and CPI over the potential development of a bauxite mine in Boffa and construction of an alumina refinery and deepwater port, source have said. Guinea's CBG halted bauxite exports on Sunday afternoon after repairs to a conveyor belt used to load ships failed, a company source told. The company's exports had restarted from a week-long shutdown earlier in the day after repairs to the conveyor were completed, but the staples the company had used to stitch the conveyor together broke by afternoon, the source said. The source did not say how long the exports would be halted. A crab the size of a ten cent piece might stop the development of mining giant Rio Tinto’s $900 million Cape York bauxite mine. Scientists employed by Rio to undertake an environmental analysis of the north Queensland site have found what is thought to be a new freshwater crab species. The findings have prompted conservationists to call on federal Environment Minister Tony Burke to immediately halt the project.
