Mozambique plans to invest around USD 126 million in a solar power plant to supply electricity to mining companies in Gaza Province, southern Mozambique, according to state news agency AIM. Provincial governor Alfeu Cuna announced the plan at the Conference on Adding Value to Mineral Resources (CAVAME-d 2026) in Nacala. The project aims to strengthen electricity supply for mining operations and industries linked to mineral processing. The Ministry of Industry and Trade has once again called for more incentives for the country’s first two bauxite refineries, which are expected to make losses for the next few years. NEWS that Russian aluminium producer UC Rusal has posted a US$3.2-billion loss for 2013 has raised fresh concerns about the future of Jamaica's bauxite industry and questions as to whether the company will resume full production here. China’s February bauxite imports have witnessed a reduction this year. China imported 3.2 mn tons in February and 2.13 mn came from Indonesia. Bauxite imports from Indonesia were 22.2% lower than that it was in February 2013. But the imports for the first 2 months of 2014 were 44 %higher than 2013 at 8.3 mn tons. The massive slowdown of bauxite mining in Jamaica has led to Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips turning up in Parliament with a withdrawal order to settle a US$33-million debt as a result of the failure of Jamaica Bauxite Mines to make good on an alumina supply agreement with Glencore. Phillips said that, arising out of the failure to supply Glencore with bauxite under an existing agreement, the country has been left with a heavy debt, and US$6 million is required for the first two payments due to Glencore in the new fiscal year. China registered a sharp drop in imports of bauxite in February due mainly to few arrivals from Indonesia, Shanghai Metals Market learnt. Inbound shipments tumbled to 3.23 million tonnes in February, down 23.86% year-on-year. Total imports were 11.23 million tonnes during the first two months of 2014, up 20.49% year-on-year, according to customs data. Indonesia remained the top supplier of imported bauxite in February, contributing to 2.13 million tonnes, but the share was off 22.15% year-on-year. The Committee of Geology and Subsurface Resources Management under Ministry of Industry & New Technologies estimates that forecast reserves of bauxites are 809 million tons. "The forecast reserves of bauxites in Kazakhstan are estimated at 809 million tons. The reserves are mainly concentrated in the Turgai bauxite province - nearly 340 million tons," Chairman of the committee Bazarbai Nurabayev said. Brazil’s exports of bauxite fell in February 2014 while alumina shipments remained stable and aluminium increased, according to the country’s trade ministry. Bauxite exports from Brazil dropped 33.2% year-on-year in February on decreased volumes sent to North America. Volumes sent abroad amounted to 553,742 tonnes, compared with 828,892 tonnes in February last year. Export revenue in the month stood at $26.81 million, compared with $27.77 million a year earlier. In the January-February period, exports totalled 1.23 million tonnes, a 25.1% increase from the same period in 2013.
