Rio Tinto’s planned USD 1.9 billion investment in the Kangwinan bauxite project is expected to support more than 1,300 construction jobs in Queensland, while helping secure the long-term future of its Weipa mining operations as existing sources of production approach the end of their lives. Located on Western Cape York Peninsula, Kangwinan will add 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite production capacity, with first output targeted for 2029 and full production expected by 2032. A state in eastern peninsular Malaysia said it has revoked the mineral ore licences (MOL) of 34 contractors to curb rampant bauxite mining in the area, due to concerns over rising pollution from the activity. Only 11 operators with permission to mine, transport and export the mineral would now be allowed to operate in the state of Pahang from Aug. 1, state news agency Bernama reported on Sunday. The decks are slowly clearing for navratna firm National Aluminium Company (Nalco) to obtain a composite licence (prospecting licence cum mining lease) over Pottangi bauxite deposits. "Nalco's case for a composite licence over Pottangi mines is now under scrutiny at the highest level. The state government after considering all aspects will seek approval from the Union mines ministry for grant of composite licence to Nalco," said a government official. The state government has asked the state PSU Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) to apply for prospecting licence of Sasubohumali bauxite reserve. The mine in Rayagada district has an estimated reserve of 81 million tonne bauxite. The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted environmental clearances to KJST bauxite and iron ore mines situated in Koira mining circle of Sundergarh district to enhance mineral output.
