Rio Tinto’s planned USD 1.9 billion investment in the Kangwinan bauxite project is expected to support more than 1,300 construction jobs in Queensland, while helping secure the long-term future of its Weipa mining operations as existing sources of production approach the end of their lives. Located on Western Cape York Peninsula, Kangwinan will add 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite production capacity, with first output targeted for 2029 and full production expected by 2032. Brisbane based Metro Mining Ltd and China’s Xinfa Group have signed an Off-Take Memorandum of Understanding aimed at pre-committing half of Metro’s Bauxite Hills Project production for the first five years. Xinfa Group Ltd is a long standing major shareholder of Metro Mining. Whilst the initial agreement is non- binding, Metro Mining CEO Simon Finnis says the companies aim to finalise binding contracts within four months. Metro Mining forecasts total annual production of up to 2 million tonnes from Bauxite Hills. Xinfa stands to secure 1 -1.2 million tonnes a year for five years. The Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) has taken samples of water, soil and bauxite in mining areas in Pahang said to be unleashing radioactive elements for analysis. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the samples were taken last Aug 3 at the river and beach in Pengorak and the result would be known in a month. "We will wait for the result of the analysis before taking any action," he told reporters at the state executive council meeting at the Pahang Foundation here today. Vinacomin made the proposal at a meeting held in Quang Ninh Province last week to discuss new regulations on the environmental protection fee for mining activities though the ministry turned down such a proposal for several times in the past. The current environmental protection fee on bauxite projects varies from VND30,000 to VND50,000 a ton at different localities but Vinacomin wants it to be cut to VND4,000 a ton. However, the ministry said the fee of VND4,000 per ton is equal to that for projects exploiting soil and sand for production of building materials. A new Mining Training Centre being developed for the Yolngu people of northeast Arnhem Land with $2.4 million in support from Rio Tinto will have the capacity to train up to 24 people at a time. In the face of declining demand for bauxite, worldwide, a total quantity of 70,000 tonnes of the ore valued at about $1.4 million is reported to have been stockpiled at the Aurum Exploration (Fiji) Ltd in Nawailevu, Bua. Mr Derek Qiu, executive Aurum Exploration said about half of the mining operations across the world would close if the situation persisted. The company reported of having only two shipments this year against a standard six or seven that were done in the previous years. Bintan Company Ltd and Asia Pacific Investment Development have been embroiled in complicated battles for land and mining rights which have resulted in the sackings of at least one minister and several staff from the Ministry of Mines. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources, Fiji says future large scale mining operations may have to provide their own power sources and conduct refining processes locally. Committee chairman Joeli Cawaki said this was one of the recommendations being considered after hearing submissions on the Nawailevu bauxite mine.
