Rio Tinto’s planned USD 1.9 billion investment in the Kangwinan bauxite project is expected to support more than 1,300 construction jobs in Queensland, while helping secure the long-term future of its Weipa mining operations as existing sources of production approach the end of their lives. Located on Western Cape York Peninsula, Kangwinan will add 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite production capacity, with first output targeted for 2029 and full production expected by 2032. Rio Tinto will expand output from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits following approval of the $1.9 billion Amrun project. Amrun involves the construction of a bauxite mine and associated processing and port facilities on the Cape York Peninsula in north Queensland. The planned initial output is 22.8 million tonnes a year1, replacing production from the depleting East Weipa mine and increasing annual bauxite exports from Cape York by around 10 million tonnes. Faced with acute raw material shortage for its refinery at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district, the Vedanta Group on Tuesday requested the Odisha Government to honour the MoU which assures supply of 150 million tonnes of bauxite for its processing facility in the State. Bauxite import during the first nine months of 2015 stood at 43,363,610 million tonnes (mt), showed data released by the General Administration of Customs. Five mining leases have been approved by the Fiji government. Director of Mineral Resources Malakai Finau says out of the five, only two are currently operating at the moment and that is the Bua bauxite mine and the Vatukoula Gold mine. More than 1 million tonnes of bauxite have been exported so far for Nawailevu. In terms of royalty the department has collected approximately $1.2 million, he said.
