Rio Tinto’s planned USD 1.9 billion investment in the Kangwinan bauxite project is expected to support more than 1,300 construction jobs in Queensland, while helping secure the long-term future of its Weipa mining operations as existing sources of production approach the end of their lives. Located on Western Cape York Peninsula, Kangwinan will add 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite production capacity, with first output targeted for 2029 and full production expected by 2032. Pottangi mines located in Odhisa has been allocated to state-run aluminium producer Nalco for manufacturing one MTPA alumina refinery by 2020. This was informed by Vishnu Deo Sai, Minister of State for Steel and Mines. The alumina refinery (stream-5) will come up at Damanjodi, Koraput district in Odisha. Rio Tinto expects to produce 2.8 million tonnes of bauxite a year and replace the output from the depleting East Weipa mine. It slashed its budget for major projects to roughly $5.5 billion for 2015 from more than $17 billion three years ago. China imported 4.48 million tonnes of bauxite in October, up 74.36% from a year ago, but plunged from 6.81 million tonnes in September, customs data showed. Aspiring exporter Australian Bauxite Limited (ABX) has clarified the real reason its maiden shipment from its first mine in Tasmania has been delayed for so long. Delays in winning shipping permits had previously been explained as the reason first exports from Tasmania's Bell Bay port were behind schedule, but ABX told the ASX for the first time on Monday that all shipping permits had been obtained. Nine mineral-rich states in India are expected to auction up to 70 mines to private firms for captive use this fiscal, mines secretary Balvinder Kumar said on Thursday.
