Bauxite Resources withdraws Bindoon bauxite project

The decision by Bauxite Resources Limited (BRL) to not proceed with the Bindoon Bauxite Mining Proposal brings to an end a period of uncertainty, according to MLA Shane Love.

BRL had anticipated a mining operation at North Bindoon of up to two million tonnes of bauxite per annum over five years.

The company recently withdrew an application it had lodged with the Environmental Protection Agency in 2010 on the basis that the Bindoon proposal was not economic at the present time.

BRL chief executive Peter Canterbury said the company had since proved up significant resources in the Darling Scarp which would provide a range of attractive opportunities for development.

Mr Love said the recent announcement by BRL gave Bindoon landowners some surety.

"I am aware that the BRL proposal had both supporters and opponents in the Bindoon community," Mr Love said.

"While I acknowledge that some residents will be disappointed at the loss of economic opportunity, many Chittering residents live in the shire for lifestyle reasons and the prospect of 10 million tonnes of bauxite being extracted in close proximity to their homes, does not fit with their decision to live in the district."

Mr Canterbury acknowledged the Bindoon Community Consultative Committee for its consultation during the application process.

"We wish to thank landowners who have been involved in the proposal and the members of the community who have provided input during consultation," he said.
