Auto hub Austria's aluminium plates, sheets and strips exports to grow 4.15% YoY in 2017

Automotive industry is a key resource generator for the Austrian economy. Rightly known as the 'land of cars,' the European country boasts the existence of a large number of major car manufacturers who have flourished here leveraging on the availability of a number of ancillary industries. The most common branches of the economy include aluminium processing, battery, tyre, engines, high-tech electronics, and gear and drive components manufacturing among others. The aluminium processing companies here manufacture a wide range of downstream aluminium products, of which aluminium plate sheets and strips remain a key category. They cater not only to the domestic auto manufacturers but also to the global industries. The export of aluminium plates, sheets and strips by Austria, hence, has increased steadily year-over-year.

In 2014, Austria exported 160,965.001 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and strips, which increased 0.32 per cent YoY to reach 161,489.003 tonnes in 2015. In 2016, the shipments surged 16.3 per cent to total at 187,918.13 tonnes. In 2017, till October, Austria is estimated to ship 163,082.26 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and strips, up 4.15 per cent from the corresponding period previous year.

Austria's aluminium plates, sheets and strips exports have also logged a value-wise growth since 2014. The country shipped this particular category of processed aluminium products valued at US$665.2 million in 2014. In 2015, the value dipped marginally at US$639.5 million only to rise next year reaching US$680.8 million. In 2017, till October Austria's total exports of aluminium plates, sheets and strips is estimated to be valued at US$580.5 million, up 2.34 per cent from the corresponding period previous year.

The top destinations for Austria’s aluminium plates, sheets and strips exports in 2016 were Germany (55787.85 tonnes), USA (35999.8 tonnes), the UK (5733.5 tonnes), Italy (14845.14 tonnes), and Spain (3267.23 tonnes).

Austria is already an automotive stronghold in Europe. As per Association of the Austrian Vehicle Industry data, 104,000 vehicles rolled off Austria’s assembly lines in 2015. The automotive ancillary units in the country have also growing in tandem with the nodal industry. The automotive component suppliers have gained a reputation as reliable partners against the backdrop of tough competition. With the demand for next-generation, technology-intensive automobiles rising globally, the exports of automotive aluminium body sheets and aluminium plates, sheets and strips are expected to increase in the years to follow.
