UAE’s alumina import to rise 19% in 2019; India continues to be the key supplier
Being one of the world’s top aluminiumproducing countries, the United Arab Emirates’ import of alumina is expected to rise in 2019 after a year-on-year drop till last year. According to our third-party data, the UAE in 2016 had imported 1.67 million tonnes and from then on the volume dropped year-on-year till 2018. In 2017, the country’s alumina import had stood at 1.36 million tonnes, down 18.5 per cent from 2016. The phenomenon continued in the year 2018 as well, as the UAE imported 1.12 million tonnes, down 33 per cent from 2016 and 18 per cent from 2017. China’s new energy vehicles production records 50.7% growth to 1.22 million units in 2018
According to the data by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China’s total production of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2018 came in at 1.22 million units, up 50.7 per cent from 2017. Of that, the production of passenger vehicles stood at 994,000 units, up 80.7 per cent year-on-year. In December, the production of NEVs was at 226,000 units, up 16 per cent year-on-year and 17.7 per cent month-on-month. Two months before in October, some 146,000 units of new energy vehicles were produced across China, up 58.1 per cent from a year earlier. This brought the total production during January-October at 879,000 units, 70 per cent higher from the same period last year. According to Shanghai Metals Market, Shandong Weiqiao Group reduced its prebaked anode purchasing prices by RMB 140 per tonne for February after it cut prices for January by RMB 1300 per tonne. This brought February’s purchasing prices to RMB 3,320 per tonne in cash and RMB 3,355 per tonne on acceptance. The prebaked anode price in east China market, however, remained the same at RMB 3,495 per tonne, as on January 30, 2019. The average prices are expected to range between RMB 3,395 per tonne and RMB 3,595 per tonne. Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has reportedly entered the final stages of commissioning for its Al Taweelah refinery. The first alumina production at the plant is expected to be in the first half of this year.
