LME aluminium price slipped sharply to US$1451.50/t on increase in opening stocks; SHFE extended growth to US$1752/t

Investors also awaited the outcome of a European Union summit this week on how to tackle economic fallout from the coronavirus crisis. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of other currencies, climbed 0.24 per cent and ended at 99.902. Three-month LME aluminium closed flat on the day (Monday) at US$ 1,505 per tonne, after dipping to a session low at US$ 1,487 per tonne. New-car sales in Europe record a plunge of 52% in March 2020

New-car sales in Europe’s major markets in March dwindled by 52 per cent, attributing to the lockdowns imposed for the containment of COVID19, showed a data on Friday, April 17. Registrations dropped to 853,077 vehicles in the European Union, Britain, and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, marking the lowest since 1990 when ACEA started compiling data. Similar slumps have been found in China and the US as well. April is likely to look no better as car plants have remained idle and government-imposed lockdowns aggravate the economic downturn that looks set to outstrip the 2008/09 financial crisis. ACEA commented, "With containment or lockdown measures taking hold in most markets from around the middle of the month, the vast majority of European dealerships were closed...

But when compared to the same period last year, the operating rates stood 16.37 percentage points lower, learned SMM. SMM survey also showed the overall sales of secondary aluminium in March were 70-80 per cent of the level during the same period last year. Large amounts of backlogged orders and stockpiles since the Chinese New Year holiday primarily supported operations of secondary aluminium plants in March. However,...
