Authorities in Matanzas, Cuba, reportedly stopped two individuals from stealing eight aluminium tubes from the railing of the Matanzas Viaduct.
{alcircleadd}The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 12, in the La Playa area. Police reportedly caught the suspects while they were removing the tubes from the bridge structure, preventing the theft and further damage to the railing.
Officials did not disclose the individuals’ identities or specify whether they were formally detained. Authorities said they would face the appropriate legal proceedings.
Part of wider infrastructure theft
The attempted theft is the latest reported incident involving public infrastructure in Matanzas. Days earlier, an entire section of metal railing disappeared from another bridge in the city. The affected structure was not initially identified, and no suspects were reported in that case.

A separate report later said part of the railing on the General Lacret Morlot Bridge, also known as the Versalles or La Concordia Bridge, was missing, leaving pedestrians, including elderly residents, exposed while crossing the structure.
The incidents have raised concerns about the security and maintenance of Matanzas’ bridges, which are important transport links and part of the city’s historic identity.
Ministry of the Interior officials have said that thieves often target isolated or poorly monitored facilities. Stolen metal components can then be resold through informal markets, where shortages have increased the value of recoverable materials.
The Matanzas case highlights how the theft of relatively small components can create wider safety risks and add to the deterioration of already vulnerable public infrastructure.
