The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a business-led initiative aimed at promoting sustainability throughout the aluminium value chain. On Tuesday, April 5, Symetal's aluminium foil rolling plant (Oinofyta) and aluminium foil conversion facility (Mandra) in Greece has been successfully accredited against the ASI Performance Standard for responsible aluminium production, procurement, and stewardship.

For a wide spectrum of worldwide customers, including the culinary, pharmaceutical, and electric car battery industries, the firm provides specialised aluminium foil materials primarily utilised in packaging solutions. Symetal's two plants have a combined yearly production capacity of 78,000 tonnes of aluminium foil, with the firm exporting over 90% of its output to about 70 countries.
With the goal of addressing sustainability challenges in the aluminium value chain, the ASI Performance Standard establishes environmental, social, and governance principles and standards. Under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment, and Social, it lays forth 59 criteria that address critical concerns including biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples' rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.
“ASI warmly congratulates Symetal on achieving Performance Standard Certification at their subsidiary’s foil rolling and converting facilities. Aluminium foil is an important component of many downstream consumer products, including batteries powering electric vehicles as part of the transition to low-carbon mobility. Reducing the life cycle impacts of these transitions requires that aluminium components are produced in a responsible manner, and Symetal’s ASI Certification demonstrates that its production process meets industry leading ESG criteria,” says Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI.
“We are proud to offer innovative aluminium foil solutions, fully embracing sustainability and ESG principles, which have always been a core issue for Symetal. The certification of our operations at Oinofyta and Mandra plants according to the ASI Performance Standard confirms our commitment on responsible production and sourcing. It also reflects the efficiency of our procedures and methods on environmental protection, social responsibility and corporate governance towards our employees, our business partners, our customers, the society and all our stakeholders,” stated Mr Konstantinos Kontos, General Manager of Symetal.
