On Wednesday, February 1, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative announced it successfully certified Yunnan Hongtai New Material Co., Ltd., a subsidiary operation of China Hongqiao Group Co., Ltd., against the Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification.

Yunnan Hongtai, located in Wenshan City, is involved in research and development, production and sales of liquid aluminium and aluminium ingots products. Its smelting operations, with a design capacity of 2.03 million tonnes per year of liquid aluminium and aluminium ingot, are based on hydropower.
ASI Performance Standard sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Environment, Social, and Governance, which address critical issues like biodiversity, labour rights, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.
On receiving the certification, General Manager of Yunnan Hongtai New Materials Co., Ltd., Wang Liyong, said: “Yunnan Hongtai New Materials Co., Ltd. make good use of Wenshan’s rich clean hydropower and natural resources to go down our green and low-carbon development path and adjust our energy structure. We are honored to be certified against the ASI Performance Standard. We will take it as a new starting point, keep tackling global technical conundrums and leading the industrial innovation in production technology.”
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI, said: “We congratulate China Hongqiao Group Co., Ltd. for achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Yunnan Hongtai smelting operation. By shifting a substantial amount of its aluminium smelting capacity to be based on hydro power, the company has demonstrated the importance it places on addressing the carbon intensity of its smelting operations and their impact on climate change. The Yunnan Hongtai operation is significant in scale, making their commitment to responsible production practices important for the industry as a whole.”
The independent, third-party audits of the facility was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.
