Last week, Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) was certified against ASI's Performance Standard (V2) 2017 for both its regional headquarters in Germany and its French aluminium production unit. The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) looks after the safe transformation, storage and sourcing of the best quality aluminium for the commercial market.
AMP's regional headquarters in Bonn's centralised operational functions has been awarded the global support functions and quality assurance by ASI, while the La Ciotat facility in France has received the certification for its aluminium beverage can bodies.
The Chief Executive Officer at ASI, Fiona Solomon, quoted in a Press Release about AMP's certification: "ASI congratulates Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) on achieving Performance Standard Certification for its centralised functions in Germany and production facility in France. Closing the loop for a company's products requires engagement with a range of stakeholders. AMP connects with federal, state, and local governments to encourage policy solutions that help to increase collection and the effectiveness of recycling systems, and it also engages with its customers to increase access to collection points and provide education on the benefits of recycling. Higher recycling rates are achieved not by chance but by design, and AMP's ASI Performance Standard Certification demonstrates the company's commitment to the material stewardship of its aluminium products."
According to Solomon, this is not a very small achievement for Ardagh Metal Packaging.
As known, the ASI certification process is an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation programme and is the only compact yet voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI Performance Standard honours environmental, social and 'principles by governance and criteria', with the ultimate aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminium value chain. It practically sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which refers to key issues such as biodiversity, rights of indigenous people and greenhouse gas emission.
The third-party audit for Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.
The Chief Sustainability Officer of AMP, Jennifer Cumbee, seemed affirmative about this ASI title and professed that this is the company's first achieved milestone in the quest toward a sustainable future.
"AMP is well on its way to extending the sustainability leadership of aluminium beverage packaging. ASI certification across a number of our facilities is another confirmation that we are on track in this journey, further positioning the beverage can as the answer for a Circular Economy and AMP as the right partner for our customers and communities in achieving shared environmental, social and governance objectives," Cumbee offered her observation.
Achieving the ASI certificate has prepared the company for global validation. The Certification Programme has evolved through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is by far the only voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. ASI Performance Standard certifications have focused on 'material stewardship', addressing issues such as product design, life cycle assessment, management of processed scrap and collection and recycling of products at the end-of-life.
