The United States removing Canada’s exclusion from aluminium tariffs with quotas, focusing to encourage the survival chances of the local producers. The aluminium market has exhibited its price rising in the prospect.

However, some US aluminium industry references are expecting the exemption to be lifted completely. This would slow down Canadian imports and stimulate a huge price rise, securing the possibility of high-priced US smelters i.e. Magnitude 7 Metals and Century Aluminium.
The USA aluminium pricing is positioned on the physical market premium AUPc1 plus the standard price CMCU3 on the LME, presently around $1,570 per tonne.
An outpouring of aluminium from Canada and the drop in demand in present due to COVID-19 lockdowns has forced the US premium below $180 per tonne from $400 which was noticed for much of the previous year. There is an expectation for a rise by January’21 of about $270 per tonne.
“The market is trying to (price in) the odds of the U.S. giving Canada a hard quota,” said CRU analyst Gregory Wittbecker, adding that a quota based on a three-year average of Canada’s aluminium exports to the United States was possible.
“If there is no exemption then all bets are off. You could see the premium back at 20 cents an lb ($440 a tonne) or higher.”
Since May’19, Canada relished exemption from Section 232 import tariffs of 10% on aluminium, a crucial metal for local automakers, drinks firms and the U.S. defence industry.
Jorge Vasquez, founder of consultancy Harbor Aluminum said: “Canada’s exemption completely evaporated the intention of Section 232, which was to help remaining U.S. smelters survive.”
As per the American Primary Aluminium Association, last year the US aluminium smelter has produced more than 1.1 million tonnes of primary aluminium, which is 20% more than US consumption.
If there are no changes to Canada’s exemption, U.S. smelters are likely to shut down, resulting in a rise in premiums.
The Canadian smelters, including London-listed Rio Tinto and U.S.-based Alcoa, have pulled up their share of the U.S. aluminium market.
Harbour Aluminium’s data compilation reflects that Canada’s primary aluminium exports to the US between January and April’20 at nearly 550,000 tonnes, which is more than double the number during the same phase previous year.
