Preliminary estimates from Aluminum Association indicate that aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) totalled an estimated 11.5 million tonnes through October 2017, up 3.3% over the same period last year.
Apparent consumption (total demand minus exports) in domestic markets through October totalled an estimated 10.2 million tonnes, up 4.4% over the same period of 2016. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products totalled 8.3 million tonnes, up 5.7%. Apparent consumption in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets totalled 1 million tonnes in October 2017, up 7.1% over October 2016. Producer inventories totalled 1.56 million tonnes in October, a slight increase over the September 2017 revised level of 1.5 million pounds. Compared to a year ago, producer inventories were up 8.9%.
Demand for aluminium semi-fabricated (mill) products in North America (domestic shipments plus imports) totalled an estimated 843 thousand tonnes in October, up 10% YoY. Shipments of aluminium sheet and plate totalled 461 thousand tonnes, an increase of 10.6%. Extruded product shipments were up 9.4% YoY to 255 thousand tonnes. Estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses totalled 332 thousand tonnes in October, down 1% YoY.
Imports of aluminium ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada totalled 370 thousand tonnes in October 2017, up 32% YoY. Total export including scrap, which accounted for roughly 56.8% of reported aluminium exports in October totalled 308 thousand tonnes; up 17% YoY. Excluding scrap, exports totalled 133 thousand tonnes, increasing just 3.2% YoY. In October exports of scrap increased 30.3%YoY, which is an incredible growth. Through October 2017, total imports were up 25.6% to 4.1 million tonnes, while exports were up 4.8% to 2.6 million tonnes.

Overall, increasing demand has driven the increase in import of semi-finished aluminium products to North America, especially the U.S. in the year till date. In case of export only aluminium scrap export has increased considerably in the period.
