Aluminum demand in North America up an estimated 6.1% Y/Y in February 2018

According to the preliminary estimates from the Aluminum Association say that aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) totalled an estimated 2.1 million tonnes through February 2018, up 6.1 per cent YoY. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products totalled 1.5 million tonnes, up 6.6 per cent. Apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets totalled an estimated 1.8 million tonnes, up 4.5 per cent YoY.

Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totalled 554 million pounds through the first two months of 2018, up 20.1 per cent over like-2017, while imports were up 6.4 per cent to 1,575 million pounds.

Demand for aluminium semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada (domestic producers plus imports) totalled an estimated 705,336 tonnes in February, up 1.9 per cent over February 2017. Shipments of aluminium sheet and plate increased slightly to 831 million pounds, extruded product shipments were up 8.6 per cent YoY to 484 million pounds. Estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses were up 10.1 per cent to 677 million pounds in February.

Apparent consumption of semi-fabricated products in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets totalled 884,505 tonnes in February, up 1.0 per cent over February 2017. Through the first two months of 2018, apparent consumption was up 4.5 per cent over like-2017. Producer inventories totalled 1.4 million tonnes in February, a decrease of 1.2 per cent from the January 2018. Compared to a year ago, producer inventories were up 12.1 per cent.

The Association’s “Index of Net New Orders of Aluminum Mill Products” for March 2018 increased 12.4 per cent over February 2018. Orders for flat roll products (sheet, plate, can stock and foil) were up 12.5 per cent month on month, while orders for extruded products increased 12.8 per cent and orders for redraw rod rose 8.5 per cent. Total orders rose 4.7 per cent YoY.
